A young man’s first buck…believe it or not! The antlers are even larger than they appear in the photo because the deer itself is so big. This buck was in the top five largest deer I took in last fall from northern Maine.

This buck ended up at my shop after being struck by a vehicle. Up north where I am, big bucks like this aren’t the norm, so he decided to have it mounted. I was happy to do it.

The only damage on the entire deer was a broken skull plate. Not bad for a 50mph+ collision. This happened near the last day of muzzleloading up here, he went 198lbs dressed.

Upright pose with a slight turn…very classy. It’d be hard to make one of these look bad! Some people aren’t a big fan of the offset shoulder that’s common on a lot of today’s deer forms…this is a great alternative. I can’t say I’m partial either way…like most things in taxidermy, it’s all personal preference.

It’s not too often I get my hands on a big cat…this one came all the way from Colorado.

We don’t know what the cat weighed because they couldn’t bring him out whole due to the rugged terrain…but he’s big. By the time he was retrieved by the hunter, he had tumbled down a cliff and into a ravine, making the pack out a nightmare. On the bright side, often the most challenging days in the woods make for some of the best memories.

This deer isn’t what you think it is at first glance. A healthy buck in Maine will shed the velvet from its antlers in September each year. But….this deer was taken during the muzzleloading week at the end of November…still in full velvet.

So what happened here? Upon further inspection, this buck was castrated. How it happened, who knows. But because of this, there’s a major imbalance of hormones due to the lack of testosterone. The result was this buck having antlers that stayed in velvet and a lot of body features being a pretty 50/50 mix between buck/doe.

It made for a fun project having to custom fit and shape just about everything to fit the skin just right. Not something I see every day.

This old bull had it rough. Whether he was trying to hold on to his dominance or just liked to fight…he was pretty worn out. He was full of fresh scars, old ones, infected punctures full of puss, rips in his ears, skin hanging off him, hair in his antler tips from gouging another bull, and to top it off, his eye was gouged pretty bad. The impact didn’t damage the eyeball itself, but tore the skin around it and became infected. The customer wanted everything as it was when he walked up to the bull the day of the hunt, so that’s what I did. I recreated everything.

I changed my intake process for this coming season for even better accuracy of the finished product. My work order system now goes even deeper in detail about the animal you bring me. I really care about what you receive from me when the mount is complete and I’ll never stop trying to improve the overall process.

Last fall, I took in a handful of bucks that went over 150”….definitely not common for my area. This one was pushing 160...

Last fall, I took in a handful of bucks that went over 150”….definitely not common for my area. This one was pushing 160” as a main frame 8 point…weighing in around 220.

As November goes on, their hair will get longer/thicker the closer we get to winter. For the second week of the season, this buck had pretty short hair.

When peope are selecting a pose, semi sneak and semi uprights are by far the most common choices. They universally make a good looking deer. A small percentage each year are “full sneak” like this buck…I really like them a lot. They make a very accurately proportioned deer, from all angles.
