Why yacht-trained staff can suit an estate, and what to check first

What they often bring:
- Service standards at a very high level.
- Comfort with long hours, pressure and small teams.
- Strong habits around discretion and privacy.

What to check:
- Are they ready for a slower, more routine rhythm?
- Do they want to live ashore long term, or is this a short break?
- Can they work with a wider team, from gardeners to security?

Ask these questions early and sea-to-shore hires can work very well

Thinking about moving from yachts to a private estate?

Many yacht skills transfer well:
- Interior crew: service standards, housekeeping, wardrobe care, discretion.
- Chefs: cooking to demanding preferences and tight timings.
- Deck and engineering: maintenance, systems, boats and toys at waterfront homes.

What changes:
- More routine, less travel (usually).
- Living ashore, often with more stable hours.
- Different ways of working with families and other staff.

Red flags in a crew job offer

Be careful if you see:
- No vessel size, type or program mentioned.
- No clear information about leave or rotation.
- You can't tell who the employer or agency actually is.
- Pressure to accept immediately "or lose it."
- Anyone asking you to pay a fee to be placed.

On that last one: under the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC 2006), seafarers should not be charged fees for recruitment or placement. If someone asks, walk away.

Good household staff don't usually leave because of the pay.

They often leave because of:
- Unclear hours and no protected time off.
- Being "always on" with no end to the day.
- No one to raise problems with.
- Never hearing that they're doing a good job.

The fixes are rarely expensive: clear schedules, real time off, regular check-ins and a thank-you that means it.

Estate managers: what's the simplest thing you do to keep good people?

Long charter season. Early starts. Late finishes.

How do you switch off on board when you finally get a break?

Crew who look after their rest last longer and enjoy the job more. Sleep, food, a call home, or a walk ashore all count.

Share what works for you. Someone new to the industry will thank you for it.
