When my parents started Barry E. Walter, Sr. Co. in California in 1986, they started small. My dad believed there was a future in manufacturing replacement plumbing parts in America, and as customers placed their trust in the company, he continued investing back into it.

Then came one of the biggest decisions our family ever made.

In 1994, we packed up the business and moved from Southern California to Fort Morgan, Colorado. We arrived with 2 CNC machines, 2 Acme Gridley screw machines, some manual equipment, and 6 team members.

We weren't a big company looking for a bigger building. We were a small company trying to create room for a future we believed was possible.

And we kept needing more room.

Our first Colorado facility was larger than what we had left behind in California. Within just a few years, we doubled it. Machines were added. Inventory grew. More people joined the team. Our capabilities expanded.

And now, 31 years after moving to Fort Morgan, we're doing it again.

This year, we're adding approximately 15,000 square feet to our facility—more than doubling our manufacturing space. The expansion will give us room for additional CNC equipment, allow us to relocate secondary operations, improve our workflow, and free up valuable space for our growing warehouse.

A worn faucet stem or cartridge carries no part number — so your counter staff dig through catalogs, eyeball dimensions, and send photos and measurements off-site, waiting for an answer, which can jeopardize the sale.

While our help desk service is the very best in the business and isn't going anywhere, we are excited to introduce a new parts identification solution in partnership with Skubot!

Last week, a customer texted us a few pictures of an old faucet they were trying to identify.

This happens all the time. One of the things we have done for decades is help plumbing wholesalers identify old and unusual repair parts. Sometimes the answer is easy. Sometimes it takes a little digging.

This one took me back a few generations.

When I looked at the pictures, I immediately recognized the handle. I was pretty sure it was an old Ge**er handle.

But I didn't recognize the stem.

There was something familiar about the handle beyond simply knowing it was Ge**er. I remembered seeing it in some of the work my grandfather had done years ago when he was developing his Plumber's Index to Concealed Fittings.

We have an old three-ring binder containing many of my grandfather's original handwritten drawings and notes from when he was researching and developing the Plumber's Index.

These weren't polished catalog drawings. They were his working notes—hand-drawn on graph paper with dimensions, thread sizes, spline counts, and whatever other information he thought might be important.

I pulled out the binder and started looking.

When I got to the Ge**er Brass page, there it was.
The handle.

My grandfather had drawn the exact same cross handle that was in the pictures our customer had just texted us.

That confirmed that my memory was right.

But there was still a problem.

The stem on that page wasn't the stem in the customer's pictures.

Unlike the finished Plumber's Index, the pages in this old binder are arranged alphabetically.

The next page was labeled Globe Brass.

And at the bottom of that page was another hand-drawn stem.

I looked at the drawing and then back at the customer's pictures.

There it was. It was the stem.

"One of the things I've been thinking about throughout our 40th anniversary is how different each generation's responsibility has been.

The first generation builds.
The second generation strengthens.
The third generation stewards.

Those are three very different jobs.

My parents built this company from the ground up. They took a tremendous risk, worked incredibly hard, and created something that has served plumbing wholesalers for four decades.

Without their vision, sacrifice, and perseverance, none of what exists today would be possible.

Our generation has been given a different responsibility.

Our job isn't simply to keep the doors open or even to grow the business. Our responsibility is to strengthen what was built—to create a company that is healthier, more resilient, and better positioned for the future than we found it.

Over the years, the four of us have naturally taken on different responsibilities. I've focused much of my energy on vision, leadership development, culture, and building relationships with our customers.

Franklin has an incredible ability to solve complex technical problems and continually pushes us to think deeper.

Lauren brings practicality, creativity, and a steady perspective that helps ensure our ideas are well thought out before we move forward.

Nathaniel is constantly looking ahead—thinking about financial strength, long-term positioning, and how the decisions we make today will impact the future.

None of us possesses all of those strengths.

Together, we're far stronger than any one of us could ever be alone."
