It’s a good idea for families regardless of immigration status to have an emergency preparedness plan in case a loved one is unexpectedly detained or unable to return home. A preparedness folder can include:

* Government-issued photo ID (passport, driver’s license, consular ID, or state ID)
* Passports for all family members
* Birth certificates
* Marriage certificate (if applicable)
* Social Security cards (if applicable)
* Immigration documents (visas, green cards, work permits, receipts, notices from immigration)
* Copies of any pending immigration case paperwork
* Medical insurance cards
* List of medications, medical conditions, and doctors
* Emergency contact list with phone numbers
* Power of attorney (financial and/or medical, if appropriate)
* Temporary guardianship paperwork for minor children (if applicable and allowed under state law)
* School and daycare contact information
* Health records and vaccination records for children
* Bank account information and instructions for paying important bills
* Copies of leases, mortgage information, vehicle titles, and insurance policies
* House and vehicle spare keys stored with a trusted person
* Contact information for an immigration attorney or accredited legal representative
* A list of important usernames and passwords stored securely (or instructions on how to access them)

It’s also wise to:

* Keep both paper and digital copies of important documents.
* Tell a trusted family member or friend where the documents are kept.
* Make sure children know who to call if a parent doesn’t come home.

Having these documents prepared does not mean someone expects to be detained—it simply helps families manage emergencies more smoothly, just as people prepare for medical emergencies or natural disasters.

Documentos importantes que toda familia inmigrante debe tener preparados en caso de una emergencia

Es recomendable tener una carpeta con copias de los siguientes documentos:

* Pasaportes de todos los miembros de la familia.
* Identificaciones oficiales (licencia de conducir, identificación estatal o matrícula consular).
* Actas de nacimiento.
* Acta de matrimonio (si aplica).
* Tarjetas de Seguro Social (si aplica).
* Documentos de inmigración (visa, residencia, permiso de trabajo, recibos o notificaciones de inmigración).
* Copias de cualquier caso de inmigración pendiente.
* Tarjetas de seguro médico.
* Lista de medicamentos, condiciones médicas y médicos tratantes.
* Lista de contactos de emergencia con números de teléfono.
* Poder notarial (Poder General, Poder Financiero y/o Poder Médico, según sea necesario).
* Documentos de tutela temporal para los hijos menores de edad (si aplica y conforme a las leyes del estado).
* Información de la escuela o guardería de los niños.
* Registros médicos y de vacunación de los menores.
* Información de cuentas bancarias e instrucciones para el pago de gastos importantes.
* Copias del contrato de renta o hipoteca, títulos de vehículos y pólizas de seguro.
* Un juego de llaves de la casa y del vehículo con una persona de confianza.
* Información de contacto de un abogado de inmigración o representante legal acreditado.
* Una lista segura con las contraseñas de cuentas importantes o instrucciones para acceder a ellas.
