The best thing about chiasms is beauty. Yahweh loves art, and he always puts magical meanings at the start and end and/ or the middle of his poetic dramas. Chiastic poetry clearly delights him. It is the world's best kept secret in archeology, in hermeneutics, in preaching, in personal devotions, and perhaps even in literary-dramatic performance... This image shows a chiasm. It is a poetic form used throughout the bible. Words or ideas are paired in pyramids or stairways - see how the colors expose the pyramid pattern here. They are beautiful and they help us to see the point at the point. This one is very simple - many are far more complicated, layered, nested, etc..

A preacher or leader

will misdiagnose and mispredict the meaning and energy and outcomes of team issues, social scenarios, political developments…

and will fail to adequately preach the whole scope of Scripture and of doctrine…

and will fail to reach the deepest corners of the hearts of men and women…

and will fail to capture every thought and focus all things on Christ…

and will fail to free men from their self-righteous semi-Pelagian arrogances…

and will fail to give people the power and hope to be free of sin and addictions…

and will fail to proclaim news so good that it shatters dark powers, gives birth to love, create missionaries and sustain martyrs…

all this to the exact degree that the pastor or leader refuses to fully bear and swallow and submit to the truth of the doctrine of total depravity = the bo***ge of the will = the sentence of daily death of Adam-self-ego-virtue-moralism-me in the life and death and resurrection of Christ.

THE BEST ROBE

O God of grace,

You have imputed my sin to my substitute,

and have imputed his righteousness to my soul,

clothing me with a bridgegroom's robe,

decking me with jewels of holiness.

But in my Christian walk I am still in rags;

my best prayers are stained with sin;

my penitential tears are so much impurity;

my confessions of wrong are so many aggravations of sin;

my receiving the Spirit is tinctured with selfishness.

I need to repent of my repentance;

I need my tears to be washed;

I have no robe to bring to cover my sins,

no loom to weave my own righteousness;

I am always standing clothed in filthy garments,

and by grace am always receiving change of raiment,

for you always justify the ungodly;

I am always going into the far country,

and always returning home as a prodigal,

always saying, 'Father, forgive me,'

and you are always bringing forth the best robe.

Every morning let me wear it,

every evening return in it,

be married in it,

be wound to death in it,

stand before the great white throne in it,

enter heaven in it, shining as the sun.

Grant me never to lose sight of

the exceeding sinfulness of sin,

the exceeding glory of Christ,

the exceeding beauty of holiness,

the exceeding wonder of grace.
