In one neighborhood, a man with a generator offered cups of coffee to neighbors without power.

As simple as that. They were so appreciative. What did it cost him? A few cents of gas in the generator to run the coffee maker and a few cents for the coffee.

Well, so far so good. Knock on wood, haven't lost power or internet where I'm staying or at home either one. I wouldn't be surprised if we lose it here though. It's sorta blinked a couple of times and there are transformers blowing all over the place. They just said 70,000 without power in my county. Oh wait ... now they say 86,000. I suspect the clock is ticking for me!

There's still surge happening. I dread seeing what Fort Myers Beach and our other local beaches look like in the morning ... and I don't even want to think about Siesta Key and the Sarasota area.

So I think Squirmy and I are gonna call it a night. Well, he already did about a half hour ago. Okay ... power flashed ... I'm posting this before I lose it!!!

Think I finally have the info I need and a plan in place. I am going to stay at a friend's who lives further inland. They have hurricane impact windows in their house and I'm pretty confident Squirmy and I will be perfectly safe there. They fared very well with Ian, though they tell us that there are so many nuances and variables with a hurricane that you can't compare storms.

Fort Myers is divided into Zones A through D for evacuations. Zone A is the Zone closest to water with the highest chance of damage and/or flooding. Zone B is further out, etc. My apartment complex is in Zone A. I spoke with the leasing office earlier this morning to see how they were impacted by Ian. There was NO flooding to any of the homes. Many of the garages did take on about 12" of water. (I do not have a garage so that doesn't really affect me) About 150 cars were lost.

The timeline has been pushed back slightly and they now expect it to make landfall later in the day on Wednesday, rather than Wednesday morning as previously expected. It has intensified to a Category 4 this morning, though it is expected to "weaken" back to a Category 3 when it comes ashore.

I expect to be without power and internet for a couple of days at least. Our complex was only without power for a couple of days with Ian and my internet provider was the first to come back online here.

So that's the current situation here in "paradise" today. I'll still take it over snow and below zero temperatures though!!!!
