“I promised I’d take care of her myself.”

We hear it from nearly every family. Here’s what usually follows: the caregiver’s health goes, then sleep goes, then something breaks, and the biggest decision of your parent’s life gets made in a hospital hallway at 11 p.m.

Caregiver burnout is one of the most common reasons families move someone out of the home.

You didn’t promise to do it alone. You promised she’d be cared for.

When did you last see your own doctor?

Not rhetorical. In Kentucky, roughly 190,000 people are providing unpaid care for someone with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, and the state ranks tenth nationally for average hours per caregiver.

Respite care exists so you can sleep, go to an appointment, or make it to your kid’s game.

Taking a break isn’t a failure of love. https://connectingheartshomecare.com/respite-care/

Free, local, and most families have never heard of it:

The National Family Caregiver Support Program through the Northern Kentucky Area Development District. No fee. You’re eligible if you live in Boone, Campbell, Carroll, Gallatin, Grant, Kenton, Owen, or Pendleton county and you care for someone 60 or older, OR a person of any age with Alzheimer’s or a related dementia.

That second part matters if you’re caring for someone with younger-onset dementia.

Call the Aging and Disability Resource Center at 859-692-2480.

And ask your parent’s doctor about Medicare’s GUIDE model. It’s a dementia-specific program running through 2032. Enrolled families get a care navigator, a 24/7 support line, caregiver education, and up to $2,500 a year in respite for those who qualify. Participating providers have to offer in-home respite.

Two free programs. One phone call each.

Bathing refusals usually aren’t about being clean.
They’re about cold, exposure, losing privacy, or being afraid of falling.

Warm the room first. Explain each step just before you do it. Let them hold a washcloth so their hands have a job. Use a shower chair. Cover what isn’t being washed.

And let go of daily bathing. Two or three times a week is usually plenty.

A dementia home safety walkthrough, in short:

Locks placed high or low on exterior doors. Door chimes so you hear it open. Signs on the bathroom door, since many attempts at the front door are really someone looking for a bathroom. Stove k***s removed or disabled. Grab bars in the bathroom. Night lights from bed to bathroom. Throw rugs gone. Medications and car keys out of sight.

The home safety step most families skip: tell the neighbors.

Families keep a dementia diagnosis quiet out of privacy and protectiveness. It’s understandable, and it removes the best safety net you have.

In neighborhoods around Union, Florence, and Fort Mitchell, the person most likely to spot your mother walking down the street at an odd hour is the neighbor two doors down.

“Mom has memory trouble now. If you see her out alone, would you call me?” That’s enough.

She asked the same question eleven times before dinner. Then got angry when someone pointed it out.

If that’s your Tuesday, you’re not doing it wrong. You’re at the point where most families start looking for a plan.

Our free guide, Understanding Dementia Care at Home, was written for Northern Kentucky families trying to keep someone with memory loss safe at home.

Six in ten people living with dementia will wander at least once, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. Many do so repeatedly, and it can happen at any stage.

If someone with dementia is missing and isn’t found within 15 minutes, call 911, file a missing person report, and tell responders the person has dementia.

Don’t wait out of embarrassment. That rule exists for a reason.
