There is no way to describe yesterday's church violence in Michigan as anything other than a tragedy. While we need to take a moment to feel for the victims and their families, we also need to realize we have been afforded the opportunity to learn from what happened. Vulnerability assessments are designed to identify how susceptible a facility is to criminal behavior. The environmental security recommendations that address these vulnerabilities WILL REDUCE RISK without making your church, school, or business look like a fortress. This is all part of a balanced, effective safety & security program. When assessments and environmental security upgrades are combined with proper emergency procedures and well-trained safety teams, the likelihood of tragedy reduces significantly.

Church and School violence has taken a very public uptick over the last several weeks both locally and nationally. Learning from these events is important, but it is vital that we do not over-react when they happen. These events only add emphasis to the importance of complimentary environmental safety & security. Focusing solely on prevention leaves you vulnerable to response. Focusing solely on response increases the likelihood that an emergency response will be needed. Neglecting either of these areas also impacts the likelihood that positive use of your facility will take place. The safest facilities are the ones where security is hidden in plain sight and that is achieved through a balanced approach between prevention and response.
That balance is what Village Security Consulting strives to help people achieve. We are always open to have a conversation about where a facility or organization stands. If it leads to a working relationship, fantastic. If it "only" leads to an organization having a better understanding of their needs or how to go about creating a safer environment for themselves, we will take that, too. Our goal is to make this world a little bit safer with every interaction we have, so if we can possibly do that for you, reach out. Looking at these windows, which residence do you think is safer? Hostile vegetation, like rose bushes, increases positive appeal and deter negative activity. Mechanical security, like window bars, may prohibit entry, but also can detract from appeal. We're here to help you maximize both safety and visual appeal through environmental design.
