I’ve always been curious with the meaning of Hoosier. I think my curiosity started with the movie Hoosiers. I watched it as a child at my grandparents house. I loved that for just a few generations back my family is full of Hoosiers. I love that I’m a transplanted Hoosier and my kids are born Hoosiers.

On February 19, 1831, the Vincennes Gazette published what is currently the earliest known printed variation of the word “hoosier.” In a letter to the editor from the pseudonymous “Rackoon,” the author wrote, “The "Hoosher" country is coming out, and the day is not far distant, when some states which have hitherto looked upon us as a kind of outlandish, half-civilized race, will have to follow in our train. - Let the "Half-horse, half-alligator"...country look to it.”

While this is the earliest known printed instance of Hoosier, its use without explanation indicates that its meaning would have been widely known at that time. As more digitized material becomes available, we may yet uncover earlier usages – comb the pages of an ever expanding number of newspapers with Hoosier State Chronicles: https://newspapers.library.in.gov/

Spent the evening working on my genealogy. My maternal grandma was an Eppley. Her great grandfather George was born in Germany and settled in Morgan County Ohio. While researching this family and Morgan County I found that their land was not too far from the Eppley Cemetery that George Eppley is buried at, and the road at next intersect is Eppley Rd.!
