How do you collect? Personally, I enjoy collecting by type (one of each design in a series). Collecting by themes like this can lead to diverse and interesting sets!

At its height, the Roman Empire encompassed a vast swath of territory, giving rise to Roman structures in many different locales. This month’s PMG Collection Inspiration highlights banknotes featuring the ruins of these ancient Roman structures. View this month’s PMG Collection Inspiration at PMGnotes.com/news/article/11359

I had the opportunity to do a small appraisal this weekend. While most of the items the individual had were exchangeable at the bank, they had a small handful of silver coins, along with this 1986 Silver Eagle. This nicely toned bullion is now going to reside in my personal collection. It felt really nice to do an appraisal amidst all the craziness of life right now, and getting to help someone else with their collection is always a wonderful feeling.

Has everyone seen the new Washington quarter reverse yet? We’re absolutely in love with it over here! Supposedly northern Indiana gets stocked with Denver mint quarters much sooner than my old home of southern Indiana ever did too. Interesting how mint distribution works sometimes. What are your thoughts on the new designs?

Philippines Issues under U.S. Administration. The history of the Philippines Commonwealth is perhaps one of the shortest, and yet most interesting in all of 21st century numismatics. Between the issuance of failed commemoratives, silver being minted both in Manila and stateside, and the McArthur pieces issued after the islands’ liberations, many a study and manuscript can and have been written on the topic. Certain collectors devote their entire areas of focus to the U.S. Philippines, and these are just a few of the coins that go towards completion of a full set.

The Republic of Latvia was a short-lived State following WWI and leading up until German occupation during WWII. Pictured here is a 1931 silver 5 Lati and 1928 25 Latu banknote. Lasting only 22 years, and issuing scarce paper script, almost all paper money from this era of independence is desirable today. Along with this, the silver 1, 2, and 5 Lati coins are an easily obtainable, yet desirable type set for foreign collectors. The history involved in these issues is part of what makes collecting so enjoyable.

People so often complain about U.S. Currency being boring and colorless, but this bright pink MPC would have to disagree! MPC’s were printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing for use by Military Personnel in areas of combat to dissuade black market trading of regular currency. This Series 651 One Dollar bill was issued in 1969, yet remains a beautiful uncirculated piece today!

Rhodesian Ten Dollars, 1979. Rhodesia was an unrecognized state of Africa from 1965 to 1979, now part of modern day Zimbabwe. They issued their own currency in the form of coins and bills during this time. This note came from a Zambian market via Lewis’ girlfriend during a recent study abroad trip! The history and significance of obsolete currencies can be an interesting area of study to any numismatist, and a fun part of the hobby to collectors young and old.
