Thinking about becoming a Remote Online Notary in Texas? Here’s something I learned today. 🔐💻

Being commissioned as an online notary isn’t just about signing up for a RON platform and starting notarizations. You also have to stay current on the Texas Secretary of State’s rules for your digital certificate and electronic seal.

Texas requires an online notary’s digital certificate to meet X.509 security standards, and if your certificate or electronic seal is replaced or becomes invalid, the updated credential has to be reported through the SOS Notary Portal.

That matters when choosing a RON platform because different platforms may handle digital certificates differently. So before investing time and money into several platforms, ask:

Does this platform use the same digital certificate I have registered with Texas, or does it require another one?

For my business, I just updated my digital certificate with the Texas Secretary of State and chose to streamline my remote online notarizations through Proof/Notarize.

The bigger lesson?

📚 Being a notary means continually checking the current rules. Technology changes. Portals change. Platform requirements change. And something as technical as a digital certificate can affect which systems you can practically use.
