On the way home from the FWGS board meeting, I stumbled upon an estate sale with genealogy books. I scored a stack of books for $13, including these 2 gems! The atlas has big fold-out maps of each district in South Carolina in the 1820s. It includes lots of place names and early landowners. The other book is essentially an index to revolutionary war bounty land grants.

I did it. I submitted my application fee to BCG. It's the first step to becoming a Board-Certified Genealogist. I'm officially "on the clock". Eek!

In a world where so much is indexed and imaged online for us to browse in our PJs, it's still important to go directly to the source. In 2016, I emailed the 2nd Rathfriland Presbyterian Church in Rathfriland, Ireland. I was seeking a copy of the original baptism record of my 4th great-grandfather, William Hart, who was baptised there on 8 March 1829. A member of the church reached out to me and sent me William's baptism record, the baptism record of a sister I didn't even know about, and pictures of the church.

I had seen the outside of the church on Google Maps but now I have a picture of the inside. To think my ancestors stood in this very spot nearly 200 years ago!

𝗪𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗗𝗡𝗔 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗱𝗿𝘆!

Currently waiting on the results from my personal mtDNA test. It's been processing for right at 7 weeks, so it should be any day now. But there's still plenty you can do while you wait for your DNA results!

If you're just getting started, begin documenting what you do know about your family history. If you're looking to break down a brick wall or solve a mystery through DNA, start reviewing what you already know about those involved. Carefully comb through your existing records for any clues you may have missed. Arrange the records in a timeline to help establish when and where they were during the different stages of their life. Compile a list of their F.A.N. Club (Friends. Associates. Neighbors.), some of them might turn out to be relatives!

I have searched and searched for this obituary for ages. I've played with search terms, I've combed through manually. Couldn't find it for the life of me. And then Ancestry pops up with a hint like it's just been there all along. Almost taunting me. Oh well, off to resolve the conflicting information in the obituary.

I'm incredibly proud of this little certificate! It was a lot of hard work, and while I didn't solve my research question this round, I learned so much and made a ton of progress! I'm still digging through the 289 pages of probate records I found for one estate! Which course should I take next?
