There's a lot of discussion lately about which clipper blade brands run the coolest and stay sharp the longest. There's plenty to unpack there, but let's focus on the two real culprits behind excessive blade heat — because too much heat is always a sign something's wrong, and it will cost you your edge sooner than you'd like.

The truth is, it's almost never the clipper causing the heat. Andis, Oster, Wahl, Heiniger, Zolitta, Buttercut, Buchelli, Artero, Furzone, GSH, AGS — all solid, trusted tools using quality high-carbon steel for their A5 style blades. The heat isn't the brand's fault. 99% of the time, it's friction, and friction has a cause. If the clipper itself were the issue, you'd feel it in the hand holding the clipper before you'd ever feel it in the blade.

Underneath every blade is what we call a 'shape' — a precise geometry that lets the top and bottom blades pinch at the teeth and rails instead of grinding flat against each other. That shape is the edge, and oil's job is to protect it, letting the two surfaces glide instead of fight. Take the oil away, and it's metal on metal. That's where the heat comes from. This is also where cooling sprays quietly work against you. Most contain chemicals that strip oil off the blade on contact — so the more you spray to cool it down, the more you're stripping away the very thing keeping it cool.

Tension between the blades is the other big factor, but that one isn't on you as the groomer. A fraction of an inch in the wrong direction can take a blade from great to unusable, so tension should always be set by the sharpener or factory, based on the shape left behind. Tension should always lean toward the lower end of the scale, but the sharpener or factory has the final say — their shape determines what's required. Poor shape, more tension needed. Better shape, less tension, and the edge holds up longer.

Let's talk about why some clipper blades get labeled "unsharpenable."

It's all about the quality of steel that is used. High-carbon steel used to be the standard for professional grooming blades. Sharper edge, lasts longer, easy to resharpen and replicate a 'factory' or ' better-than-new' finish.

Unfortunately today, this type of steel isn't always used, which leads to confusion on why your sharpener might not be able to sharpen them. For sharpeners, it's harder on their equipment and costs more in labor as it can take the same amount of time to sharpen 4 high-carbon blades as it does to sharpen one of these lower-carbon produced blades. Some opt to not work with these blade types at all, some will bypass the process and replace parts, effectively driving a higher-price point.

While we would never recommend professionals to purchase this particular type of steel due to the higher-quality and more cost-effective options available, the market is demanding it, and we're seeing more and more of these types of blades come across our bench daily.

We use a wet-diamond sharpening process which allows us to be able to resharpen any type of clipper blade, including ceramic, 5-in-1, DLC, and even those with the 'special coatings.' It still can take a little bit longer to resharpen them, which can affect pricing due to additional labor, but it will always be cheaper than buying new, and we can always restore the edge to a better-than-factory finish, regardless of the material used in production.

Whatever blades you have, there's almost always a cost-effective way to resharpen them properly, without the high-cost of replacing. Send them our way.

There are a variety of different makes and models of trimming blades | 5-in-1 blades, and some of them come equipped with ceramic cutters. At times, it can be hard to tell as some of the ceramic cutters are being produced to mimic the look of steel.

Below are a few cutters that came off of Grooming Essential 5-in-1 blades. Can you tell where all of the teeth are damaged? This happened as a sharpener tried to resharpen them on a normal sharpening machine, possibly without realizing they were ceramic until it's too late. Fortunately, all of the customers 5-in-1 blades were not ruined, and we were able to restore the rest.

It does not matter what brand, model, material, or even if you bought them on Temu. Our wet-diamond sharpening process is able to handle all clipper blades that can be disassembled and reassembled. We do not replace the blades, we resharpen them, leaving a better-than-new edge.
