📢 U.S. Government Shutdown Has Started….. Here’s What You Need to Know About Taxes 🇺🇸

The federal government officially entered a partial shutdown on January 31, 2026 because Congress failed to pass funding for all federal agencies before the deadline. Lawmakers are currently in a budget fight; especially over funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and immigration policy… which stalled final spending bills and caused funding to lapse.

So what does this mean for taxpayers and tax preparers? 🤔

✅ Tax preparation and e-filing are still happening normally.
☑️ You can still prepare & submit your tax returns electronically.

✅ Tax refunds are still being processed and issued… for now.
☑️ IRS leadership has stated that refund checks should not be delayed by this partial shutdown.

⚠️ However, some IRS services could slow down if the shutdown continues:
🔹 Customer service phone lines & help centers may have reduced staffing.
🔹 Paper return processing and mailed correspondence may take longer.
🔹 Responses to notices, audits, and disputes could be delayed.

💡 Important: A shutdown doesn’t change tax deadlines; returns are still due on time (e.g., April 15 for most taxpayers).

🗣️ Why It Happened:
The shutdown began because Congress did not finalize all federal appropriations bills by the funding deadline. Lawmakers have been in a standoff, in particular over funding for the Department of Homeland Security and related immigration policy issues which prevented approval of the final budget package.

📌 Bottom Line:
➡️ File your taxes as usual.
➡️ Refunds are expected to continue.
➡️ Be prepared for slower IRS responses or delays in paper-based services while the shutdown continues.

EITC refunds for many available by March 3

The easiest way to check a refund's status is by using “Where's My Refund?” on IRS.gov or the IRS2Go app.

Many factors can affect refund timing after the IRS receives a tax return. Although the IRS issues most refunds in less than 21 days, the IRS cautions taxpayers not to rely on receiving a refund by a certain date, especially when making major purchases or paying bills. Some returns may require additional review and may take longer.

Under the federal Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes (PATH) Act, the IRS cannot issue Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) refunds before mid-February. “Where's My Refund?” should show an updated status by February 22 for most early EITC/ACTC filers. The IRS expects most EITC/ACTC related refunds to be available in taxpayer bank accounts or on debit cards by March 3 if they choose direct deposit and there are no other issues with their tax return.

Pay your taxes. Get your refund status. Find IRS forms and answers to tax questions. We help you understand and meet your federal tax responsibilities.

I know everyone is excited to receive their tax refund! However, it’s important to be patient and wait for all your necessary documents, such as your W-2 and any 1099 forms you may have. Filing without these can increase the risk of an audit, and we definitely want to avoid that. Don’t worry I’m here for you, and you’ll get your refund the right way. Thank you in advance for choosing the best to handle your taxes! Let’s make this tax season a success! 🫶🏼❤️

Tax Tip:
Due diligence is crucial for staying compliant with the IRS and avoiding penalties or legal trouble. This concept refers to the process of carefully researching and verifying all financial and tax-related information before submitting it to the IRS. For tax professionals, due diligence is not only a best practice but also a legal requirement, especially when preparing tax returns for clients.

Here are some key areas where due diligence is particularly important:
1. Accuracy of Tax Returns: Make sure all income, deductions, credits, and other tax-related details are correctly reported. Errors or omissions can lead to audits, fines, or even fraud charges.
2. Documenting Information: Keep records of all supporting documentation, such as receipts, statements, and tax forms. This is essential in case the IRS questions your return or conducts an audit.
3. Verifying Claims: If claiming deductions or credits (e.g., earned income tax credit or child tax credit), ensure that the taxpayer meets all eligibility requirements and can provide the necessary documentation to support those claims.
4. Understanding Tax Laws: Be well-versed in the most current tax laws and IRS regulations. Tax laws change frequently, and failing to stay updated can result in mistakes.
5. Avoiding Fraudulent Activity: Never intentionally misrepresent or withhold information on a tax return. The IRS imposes heavy penalties for fraud, and it can also lead to criminal charges.

For tax professionals, the IRS has specific due diligence requirements, particularly for areas like claiming the earned income tax credit (EITC), child tax credit (CTC), and other refundable credits. Failing to perform due diligence can result in penalties, and if patterns of negligence or intentional disregard are found, it could lead to further sanctions.

In sum, consistent and careful due diligence is essential to avoid IRS issues, protect against audits, and maintain a good standing with the tax authorities.
