I always tell nurses to just go for it! If you’re feeling stagnant or content in your profession, it’s time to take the leap. You may not feel 100% ready but trust me you will grow so much more once you take that leap.

Let’s talk money and negotiating! This is something that I struggled with up to a year ago. It’s important to know your worth and negotiate your pay. As a new grad, i recommend doing your research on what the average pay rate is and going from there. At the novice level, with no experience you want to at least be at a facility who’s pay is competitive with others in the area. As your expertise increases however, it’s very important to negotiate. Many jobs are going to give you the lowest rate they can, but that does not mean that you have to accept it. If they want you then they will hire you. If not, then i suggest moving on. There are so many jobs out there in the healthcare field that there is no reason to settle.

I’m sure we’re all guilty of saying “I don’t have time”. I know I am, but it’s important to remember that it’s not about having time, it’s about making time. How often do you push your goals aside because you “don’t have time?” If you want to move to the next level in all aspects of life, you have to make time for the things that mean the most to you. No more excuses, find the time to do what you’ve been putting off.

Yesterday i mentioned the importance of self improvement. Today I’m reflecting on my evolution as a nursing professional.

The first photo was taken in 2011. I was graduating with my BSN. I didn’t know what was next for me. I was afraid, I didn’t feel like I knew much even after 4 years of school but I was also excited to begin the journey.

The second photo was taken in 2015 when graduating with my MSN. I had been working as a registered nurse for 4 years. I was the charge nurse and felt comfortable in my leadership skills, but I felt stagnant in my role. I was ready for a change and began working in nursing administration the following year.

The next photo was taken in 2018 following receiving my DNP. At this point I knew nursing administration was not for me. I had received my degree in Nursing administration but did not like the politics involved in the hospital arena. What I did learn in my leadership role was that I loved teaching!

The last picture was taken in 2019, just 1 year later at my first graduation as a nursing professor. I had finally found the role that was perfect for me. It required me to learn continuously, prep as if I were a student again, and engage with students who were so eager to learn.

Trust the process. There are so many job roles in the nursing arena that you don’t have to become stagnant. With every step in my nursing journey, self reflection and improvement was necessary. Keep doing the work!

When i first became a nurse I was terrified of being a leader. I just wanted to do my job and provide good care to my patients. As I grew in the nursing profession, I naturally became a leader but it didn’t come without much self reflection and development.

Self development is an essential leadership skill for nurses at all levels. Whether you’re a novice nurse or an expert nurse, growing yourself is a continuous process. Never stop learning. Never stop asking questions. You must grow yourself before you can help others to grow.
