This might be my favorite photo from Toronto.
Because it captures years of words and ideas and musings that existed only in journals, on my laptop, and in my head - now made visible.
Tuesday night I read a book passage from You Have a Gift to Bring to a standing room only crowd. Some of the attendees I already knew. Most I’d never met.
Before the fireside chat began, I spent some time talking with a few younger women who were attending. We got on the topic of networking and industry events, and they admitted something I think a lot of people feel:
Events like this can be intimidating.
They knew it was important to show up, build relationships, and meet people. But walking into a room where you don’t know many people can feel uncomfortable.
A little later, during the fireside chat, it was time for me to read a passage from the book.
I opened it and realized I’d forgotten my reading glasses (which is a shame, because the frames are pink and what my late mother-in-law would call “hooty” and just completely fabulous and fun and functional, albeit doing me no good thosuands of miles away in the home office desk). 🤦🏼♀️
When I mentioned it, one of the women attending as a guest immediately jumped up and handed me hers.
Before focusing in on the pages which I could now actually read clearly, I laughed and told the room:
“I was just talking with some of the younger women here tonight about how intimidating events like this can feel when you don’t know anyone. Y’all just saw what happened. Seriously - do not feel intimidated, because this is how we roll and this is how we show up for each other.”
That moment pretty much set the tone for the entire evening.
The fireside chat ended. People stayed. The room gradually got smaller, but nobody seemed eager to leave.
Conversations continued. Stories were shared. Books were signed.
It was one of those nights where the scheduled event ended, but the real conversations kept going.
And they continue…
