The Charlotte AI Summit was brilliant, and ran the gamut of Al perspectives, from the highly regulated to the highly commercial.

I ran that same gamut, with a wide-ranging conversation on intellectual property, copyright, and governance (that could easily have gone on for another hour) with Michael Abramson, Lena Chun Lee, and Han Kanthi, moderated by Minh Trang Ngo.

Then all the way at the other end of the spectrum, talking with Breanne Byrne and Chiana Grant, LSSYB on using AI wisely and well to support marketing, SEO, and GEO.

Two such different discussions, but for me, the same through line. Governance and ethics are the foundation.

Yesterday I attended a session on legal agentic AI with Harvard Law professors, part of the Harvard Data Sciences Initiative. It was a useful discussion on how the legal profession is changing rapidly, and may be unrecognizable in 7 years.

And then another brilliant session with the Chesterton Society, dissecting Pope Leo the XIV's encyclical on our humanity and dignity in this newest Industrial Revolution. Moving, demanding, provoking.

Each session educational and insightful, the first tactical and the second transcendent.

We are called to be human at this moment when machines can do so much for us. To be purposeful and intentional in protecting our own thinking capability, that of our children, that of our neighbors. And to be intentional as well in protecting the environment and resources consumed by our rapidly encroaching technology habits.

If I don't want a data center in my backyard, my neighbor in another county surely does not.

What do we do with this? We can't remove Gen AI from the public sphere, but we can use it with intention, with wisdom. We can embrace reading for pleasure and for work again. We can continue inviting discussions with everyone God has put into our sphere. We can remember our collective good and purposefully embed it into our private businesses and corporate work.

And I think that may be the next right step we all take. Examine our values and take the steps to ensure we are living them out, at work, at school, at home, with our neighbors, and in our next prompt. Or hand-written letter.
