NKY Swarm Removal

I really hate to inspect hives in the Summer time, but it’ll be getting cooler soon and it’s important to make sure they are ready for winter. This hive is twenty minutes away from our house, so it’s not like I can run in the back yard and check them anytime I want. I lost a hive, it had wax moths. My other hive looks to be doing rather well. I saw indications that the queen bee has been busy. There was lots of capped brood. Seeing the queen has been actively laying I didn’t feel the need to check every frame, honestly it was just too hot!

Did you know there are many different types of pollinators? It’s not just honey bees that can pollinate. Bees, birds, moths, and even bats can pollinate. This afternoon bumble bees were enjoying some of my landscaping. Notice the yellow pollen sacs towards the back of the bees? I’ve never noticed so many bumble bees at once. It also got my dogs attention.

My husband was always concerned about some of the trees near our beehives possibly falling and damaging our hives. We were lucky that the falling branches and trees fell in the right direction.

I had a little time to check on our garden and noticed the pollinators were doing their job. We got a late start on our garden this year so the garden isn’t as full as it usually is. I totally enjoyed watching our bees at work in the garden though.

I knew we were going to be busy this weekend, so I squeezed in a quick hive inspection of three hives yesterday. I checked the two hives that were swarms from Southgate and Cincinnati. Even though I didn’t physically see the queens, there was proof that the queen had been at work. The Cincy hive was full of capped brood.
I checked my one hive at home that was my own swarm that moved into a swarm trap that was set up. I found the queen and she is also laying eggs.

This sweet swarm in Ludlow this morning decided it wasn’t sticking around to wait for me to get my smoker lit. They literally swarmed right in front of me and left. That was a first.
