Dryer running but not heating? Don't automatically blame the heating element.
A no-heat dryer can be caused by the heating element, a thermal safety device, power-supply problems, wiring, controls, or other components.
And if a thermal safety device has failed, there's another question I want answered: Why did it fail?
Restricted airflow can cause excessive temperatures, so replacing a failed part without finding the cause may only lead to another failure.
🔧 Dereck's Tip: If your dryer was taking longer and longer to dry before it finally stopped heating, tell your technician. That's an important diagnostic clue.

Ice on your air conditioner in the middle of summer? That’s not a good thing.
A frozen AC coil can be caused by something as simple as restricted airflow from a dirty filter, but it can also involve a dirty coil, blower problem, or low refrigerant from a leak. ďż˝

🔧 Dereck’s Tip: If you see ice on the refrigerant lines or indoor coil, shut the cooling system off and let it thaw. Check the filter, but if it freezes again, have the system diagnosed.
Don’t automatically assume it “just needs Freon.” Find out why it froze first.

Washer making a strange noise? Don’t assume the worst.
A loud roar, grinding, banging, or scraping sound can certainly indicate a problem—but the noise alone doesn't tell us what failed.
I've seen washer noises caused by everything from objects caught where they shouldn't be to pumps, suspension components, loose parts, and bearings.
The biggest diagnostic clue is often when the noise happens. Does it happen while washing, draining, or only during spin?
🔧 Dereck’s Tip: If your washer develops a new noise, pay attention to when you hear it and what the washer is doing at the time. Don't assume an expensive repair until we actually find the cause.

Finding ice on the bottom of your freezer?
It may not be spilled water. A clogged or frozen defrost drain can prevent normal defrost water from reaching the drain pan, causing ice buildup or water underneath the refrigerator drawers.
🔧 Dereck's Tip: If you remove the ice and it keeps coming back, there's probably a reason. The drain system needs to be checked rather than repeatedly removing the symptom.

Seeing rust on your dishwasher rack? Don't ignore it.
Once the protective coating is damaged, water can reach the steel underneath and corrosion can spread. Rust can also leave orange or brown staining on dishes and inside the dishwasher.
🔧 Dereck's Tip: Catch small damaged areas early. Rack repair coating or tine caps may save a rack before the corrosion becomes extensive.

Microwave runs but doesn't heat?
If the light, fan, and turntable work but your food stays cold, that doesn't automatically mean the magnetron is bad. Door switches, high-voltage components, controls, and other problems can produce similar symptoms.
🔧 Dereck's Tip: Don't open a microwave to troubleshoot it yourself. High-voltage components can remain dangerous even after the appliance has been unplugged.

Oven gets warm but takes forever to preheat?
Don't assume that because you feel heat, both heating elements are working.
An electric oven can sometimes continue heating with one element failed, causing long preheat times, uneven cooking, and poor temperature performance.
🔧 Dereck's Tip: Heating elements don't always show visible damage when they fail. Electrical testing can tell us whether the element is actually bad or simply isn't receiving power.

Garbage disposal humming but not grinding?
That humming sound often means the motor is getting power but something is preventing it from turning.
🔧 Dereck’s Tip: Shut it off instead of repeatedly trying the switch. A simple jam may be repairable, but repeatedly powering a stalled motor can cause additional damage.
Never reach inside a disposal with your hand, and disconnect power before attempting to clear an obstruction.

Does your refrigerator door need an extra push to stay closed?
Don’t ignore it. A door that isn’t sealing correctly can allow warm, humid air into the refrigerator, leading to condensation, frost, longer run times, and eventually cooling problems.

Dryer getting hot but taking two cycles to dry?
The heating element may not be the problem at all.
Restricted airflow from lint buildup, a crushed vent hose, or a clogged exterior vent can trap heat and moisture inside the dryer. That means longer drying times, higher energy use, and unnecessary stress on the machine.
🔧 Dereck's Tip: Check the airflow at your outside dryer vent while the dryer is running. Weak airflow deserves attention.
