You never know what you’re going to find until the tear-off begins.
During today’s roof replacement, we uncovered something that should never be considered a proper roofing practice: the previous contractor installed new roof decking directly over two existing layers of shingles, rather than removing the old roofing materials down to the original structure.
Installing decking over existing shingles can create several problems, including added unnecessary weight, an uneven fastening surface, concealed moisture or deterioration, and—most importantly—it prevents the roof structure underneath from being properly inspected and repaired.
At Roof Rx, when we replace a roof, we believe in doing it correctly from the deck up. That means removing the existing roofing system, inspecting the decking and framing underneath, replacing damaged or compromised materials, and making sure the new roofing system has a solid foundation before installation begins.
The part of the roof you can’t see is just as important as the shingles you can.
