Around 5:30 AM, Franklin County Fire Department crews responded to one of several structure fires battled overnight. The fire was determined to have been caused by a lightning strike that ignited the attic space above two bedrooms.

A sleeping child was awakened by the presence of smoke, alerting the occupants to the danger. Thanks to their quick actions, everyone safely evacuated the home before crews arrived. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the attic area above the bedrooms, preventing further extension and limiting damage.

This incident serves as an important reminder that emergencies can happen without warning. Make sure your family has a home escape plan, and most importantly, discuss and practice that plan with your children. Knowing what to do and where to go can make all the difference when seconds count.

🔥 Mulch Fire Safety Reminder 🔥

With warmer temperatures arriving, it’s important to remember that mulch fires are a real hazard. The fire pictured below started in a mulch bed adjacent to a building and was extinguished before it could extend into the structure.

Many people are surprised to learn that mulch can ignite from discarded ci******es, hot ashes, fireworks, equipment exhaust, or other ignition sources. Under certain conditions, mulch can also generate heat internally and ignite through a process known as spontaneous combustion.

Mulch Fire Safety Tips:

• Never discard ci******es into mulch beds.
• Keep mulch layers thin (2-4 inches is generally recommended).
• Avoid piling mulch against buildings, decks, or combustible siding.
• Water mulch during prolonged hot, dry weather.
• Properly dispose of smoking materials in approved containers.
• Be alert for smoke, unusual odors, or excessive heat coming from mulch piles.

A small fire can quickly become a larger incident when it occurs next to a structure. If you see smoke coming from a mulch bed or pile, call 911 and have it checked before it spreads.

Hydrant Testing Complete for Another Season

Over the past several weeks, crews have been conducting hydrant inspections and flow testing throughout the county.

These tests allow us to verify hydrant operation, check water flow and pressure, identify maintenance needs, and ensure reliable water supplies are available when emergencies occur.

The information gathered helps firefighters make critical decisions during fire incidents and ensures our hydrants are ready when they’re needed most.

Thank you to our personnel for their hard work completing this important annual task and helping keep Franklin County prepared.

Franklin County Fire Department, alongside City of Frankfort Fire & EMS and Emergency Management, responded to a hazardous materials incident involving a chemical exposure at a local facility. More than 25 employees were evaluated and transported after a product became aerosolized, causing exposure-related symptoms.

Through coordinated operations, crews were able to quickly and safely identify the chemical involved, isolate the affected area, and ensure no additional contamination or exposures occurred. Incidents like these highlight the importance of hazardous materials training, interagency communication, and teamwork between responding agencies.

We are thankful for the strong partnership between all responding units and for the efforts of personnel on scene who worked to bring the incident to a safe resolution.

Today members trained on our side-by-side brush unit and QTAC pump system, focusing on mobile brush fire attack, water application, and hose deployment operations along simulated fire lines and wooded terrain. Crews worked through scenarios involving pump-and-roll operations, communication between driver and nozzle operator, and transitioning from open field fire attack into wooded areas.

Training like this helps prepare our members for rapid response to grass, brush, and woodland fires in areas that larger apparatus may have difficulty accessing. These units provide quick mobility, improved access, and valuable suppression capabilities during wildland and rural fire incidents.

Continuous training ensures our crews can operate safely, efficiently, and effectively when these incidents occur throughout Franklin County.

Great to be a part of this hands-on training opportunity with our partners at City of Frankfort Fire & EMS and Franklin County Schools.

Investing in the next generation of firefighters is something we take seriously. Giving students the chance to see, learn, and experience the fire service firsthand helps build a strong foundation, not just for future careers, but for safer communities.

Units responded to a reported garage/shed fire located directly beside a residence earlier today.

Crews arrived to find an active fire with a power line that had burned in half, creating an additional hazard on scene. Firefighters quickly worked to secure the area, contain the fire, and prevent extension to a nearby residence.

Thanks to a fast and coordinated response, the fire was brought under control and damage was limited.

We’re proud to support the next generation of firefighters right here in Franklin County.

Providing equipment like this helps give students real-world exposure and hands-on experience that simply can’t be replicated in a classroom alone. It’s an investment not just in their future, but in the safety and strength of our community as a whole.

When winter weather hits, you may see our trucks rolling with tire chains like the ones pictured. These chains are installed by our firefighters when needed and give our apparatus extra traction on snow and ice covered roads, helping us maintain control, stop safely, and get to emergencies when conditions are slick.

🚒 A quick safety note:
When chains are installed, our speeds are reduced to protect the equipment, the crew, and everyone else on the road. It does make response times a bit slower but it’s the safest way for us to get where we’re needed and still arrive ready to help.

Stay safe, slow down, and remember: winter driving takes patience, for everyone. ❄️
