Tomorrow the Frankfort and Franklin County community will come together to honor the life of Franklin County Firefighter Kolby Tucker.

The celebration of life will include a large procession of fire and EMS vehicles in Kolby's honor, beginning from Capital City Christian Church, traveling from Versailles Road to KY676/East West Connector, to Martin Luther King Blvd, turning onto East Main, ending at the Frankfort Cemetery. Please be aware of traffic impacts beginning approximately 11:30 AM Tuesday, September 1 and lasting until the procession concludes in these areas. A map of the route is below.

During this time, traffic will be blocked from E Main Street to allow entrance to the cemetery. Downtown traffic coming from Capital Avenue will be directed to turn left onto W Main and traffic on W Main will be diverted to Capital Avenue. The intersection at E Main and MLK Blvd will be blocked during the procession, please use an alternate route. Glenns Creek Road from E Main to Fowler St/Cold Harbor Drive will be closed for approximately 2 hours.

Frankfort Police and ​Franklin County Sheriffs Office will be on hand to assist with traffic control, please observe caution and respect during this time. Our community's thoughts and prayers are with everyone during this difficult time.

It is with great sadness that Franklin County Fire & Rescue announces the passing of Firefighter Kolby Tucker.

Kolby served our department for the past three years and was a highly valued member of our fire department family. His dedication, eagerness to learn, and desire to continually grow as a firefighter earned him the respect of those who had the opportunity to work alongside him.

Our thoughts are with Kolby’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time, as well as his friends and fellow firefighters.

Out of respect for Kolby’s family, we ask that their privacy be respected in the days ahead.

With all the rain we’ve had lately, our recruits figured they might as well get a little wetter!

Recent training included sprinkler operations and practicing how to properly shut down an activated sprinkler. Sprinkler heads activate when exposed to enough heat, helping control a fire until crews can fully extinguish it.

Once the fire is under control, a timely sprinkler shutoff is important to help limit unnecessary water damage. Another simple but important skill for our recruits to have.

Congratulations once again to our recently promoted members, who were officially pinned during tonight’s Franklin County Fiscal Court meeting.

The pinning ceremony marks the beginning of a new chapter and new responsibilities within the department. We’re proud to see each of these members continue to grow in their careers and take on their new roles.

Today officially marks the end of an incredible chapter for these members as they retire from the Franklin County Fire Department.

Between them are 84 total years of service, countless calls answered, lives impacted, and friendships built along the way. Their dedication has helped shape this department, and the impact they’ve made will be felt for years to come.

Thank you for your commitment to this community and to everyone you’ve served alongside. Congratulations on your well-earned retirement, we wish you and your families nothing but the best in this next chapter.

Dumpster fires may not seem like a big deal, but they can quickly spread to nearby buildings, vehicles, or other exposures if not handled quickly.

Today’s fire was determined to have started from used rags soaked with mineral spirits that were discarded in a dumpster. Oily rags can generate heat as they dry, leading to spontaneous ignition under the right conditions.

Crews used Ladder 8’s aerial waterway to safely extinguish the fire from above while minimizing exposure to personnel. With no nearby hydrants available, Tanker 5 supplied water to support the operation.

Every incident presents its own challenges, and today’s response is a great example of crews adapting to the situation and using the right tactics to bring it to a safe conclusion.

Great job by all personnel on scene.
