Around 5:30 AM, Franklin County Fire Department crews responded to one of several structure fires battled overnight. The fire was determined to have been caused by a lightning strike that ignited the attic space above two bedrooms.
A sleeping child was awakened by the presence of smoke, alerting the occupants to the danger. Thanks to their quick actions, everyone safely evacuated the home before crews arrived. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the attic area above the bedrooms, preventing further extension and limiting damage.
This incident serves as an important reminder that emergencies can happen without warning. Make sure your family has a home escape plan, and most importantly, discuss and practice that plan with your children. Knowing what to do and where to go can make all the difference when seconds count.
