Answer: Al Capone. He was convicted of federal income tax evasion in October 1931 and sentenced to 11 years in prison. The IRS agents on the case followed the money to build it. Not bad for a case that had nothing to do with the rest of his reputation. 😅

Quick guess before you scroll: what year did employers start withholding federal income tax from every paycheck?

Answer: 1943. The Current Tax Payment Act, signed by President Franklin Roosevelt in June 1943, created the paycheck withholding system we still use today, with withholding starting that July.

The bonus fact: to get everyone current, the law forgave 75% of one year's tax bill so people wouldn't owe two years at once.

A quick reminder: the IRS generally makes first contact by mail, not by text, email, or social media. If you get an unexpected message claiming to be from the IRS asking for payment or personal information, don't click, don't reply, and don't pay.

📅 Filed an extension in April? Your 2025 return is due Thursday, October 15, and for most taxpayers, there's no additional extension after that.

A few things to keep in mind:

🔹 Your extension gave you more time to file, not more time to pay. Interest and penalties on unpaid balances have been adding up since April.
🔹 Missing October 15 can trigger the failure-to-file penalty, which is typically much larger than the penalty for paying late.
🔹 Self-employed? You can generally still make 2025 SEP-IRA contributions up to your extended deadline.
