Years ago, Heather looked at me and said, “We’re leaving. In two weeks. Just you and me.”

And my response was basically, “Yeah, but…”

There were things that needed to get done. Problems that needed to be solved. I remember thinking, give me a couple of months and THEN we’ll go.

Her response?

Nope. We’re going.

So we went.

And I will never forget what happened on that trip.

I found my wife again.

I didn’t realize how much stress, responsibility and just keeping our heads down had taken from us. But somewhere in those few days, the gal I married showed back up.

And I remember telling her, “The next time you feel like this, we’re going. It doesn’t matter. We’re going.”

That taught me something I’ve carried with me ever since:

There will ALWAYS be something else to do.

Another problem.
Another opportunity.
Another goal.
Another season you just need to “get through.”

But your home life is more important than your business.

I love our businesses. I love what we get to build. I want them to succeed greatly.

But business is what I do. It’s not who I am.

I’m a husband before I’m a CEO.
I’m a father before I’m a CEO.

God first.
My wife second.
My family third.
Work fourth.

And I genuinely believe our businesses are better because we protect that order, not in spite of it.

So if you’ve been telling your spouse, your kids, or yourself, “Just let me get through this season…”

Maybe don’t wait for the season to end.

Because there’s always going to be another one.

This leadership habit still matters.
Stop answering every question your team brings you. Ask them what THEY would do instead.
Give them 20 minutes to think it through, then come back to you.
That's how you build a team that leads itself, not one that waits on you.
