It's ridiculous to focus on the number of humans on the planet when the wealthiest 10% are using most of the resources. You can't even begin to guess at what the carrying capacity of the planet is until that's resolved, and the damage done by those in power is likely to artificially reduce that capacity.

The boreal forest stretches across Alaska, Canada, Scandinavia, and Russia, forming the largest continuous forest on Earth.

It also contains enormous peatlands that have accumulated partially decomposed plant material over thousands of years, making the region one of the planet's largest terrestrial carbon stores. In many places, these peat deposits are tens of feet deep.

During prolonged heat and drought, the peat can dry out enough for fire to burn beneath the surface. Unlike typical forest fires, peat fires can smolder slowly underground for weeks or even months with very little oxygen. A wildfire may appear to be extinguished, yet embers can continue burning deep below the surface before flaring back up when conditions become hot, dry, and windy again.

These underground fires are notoriously difficult to fight. Water dropped from aircraft often cannot pe*****te deep enough to extinguish them, and firefighters frequently have to flood or excavate the burning peat by hand.

Besides destroying forests, peat fires release enormous amounts of carbon that have been stored for millennia, which is why major boreal wildfires are a significant concern for the global climate as well as local ecosystems.
