🌈 What did we learn from our LGBTQI+ Listening Sessions? 🏠
The feedback we collected highlights both the strengths of recovery residences and the challenges LGBTQI+ individuals continue to face in recovery housing.
💙 Key findings:
✔️ 100% cited chosen family and peer support as critical to recovery.
✔️ 88% felt staff were adequately trained and supportive.
✔️ 70% felt comfortable disclosing their identity.
⚠️ Challenges identified:
▪️ 75% reported experiencing discrimination or microaggressions.
▪️ Significant gaps remain in LGBTQI+-specific resources and services.
▪️ Wait times for LGBTQI+-specific supports ranged from 4–7 months.
▪️ Concerns around gendered spaces, inconsistent rules, and cultural stigma were also discussed.
The most common themes included chosen family, pronoun respect, staff competency, discrimination, gender-inclusive spaces, and access to resources.
These findings underscore the importance of LGBTQI+-specific recovery residences. While many participants shared positive experiences, the data shows a clear need for recovery environments intentionally designed to provide affirming support, culturally responsive services, and a true sense of belonging. Everyone deserves a recovery home where they feel safe, respected, and supported.
