Marlo Spaeth, an associate with Down syndrome, worked at a Walmart in Manitowoc, Wisconsin for 16 years, earning consistently glowing performance reviews.

But then, in 2014, the retailer introduced a computerized scheduling system that changed her routine 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM shift.

Because her condition required a rigid schedule to prevent her from falling physically ill from eating dinner at irregular times, she requested to keep her original hours.

Walmart denied the reasonable accommodation request and fired her for absenteeism when she struggled with the new system.

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) sued on her behalf, arguing that Walmart violated the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Following a four-day trial, an eight-person jury deliberated for just three hours before awarding Spaeth $125 million in punitive damages and $150,000 in compensatory damages.

While federal caps automatically reduced the monetary payout to the legal maximum of $300,000, a federal judge later ordered Walmart to officially rehire her with back pay.
