*****FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE**** Hazardous Waste Interrupts Operations at Valley Recycling Facility Frenchville, Maine An incident involving the improper disposal of fluorescent light bulbs containing mercury caused the temporary closure of the Valley Recycling Facility (VRF) in Frenchville on Wednesday January 18, 2023. The incident involved fluorescent bulbs improperly dumped into a demolition debris roll-off dumpster that was then transported to the VRF in Frenchville. VRF staff discovered a large quantity of busted bulbs after the roll-off was emptied on the floor of the VRF transfer station, at which Management immediately notified the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (MEDEP) of the potential contamination. The result of this was the temporary closure of the Transfer Station on Wednesday to all waste haulers and the General Public, until MEDEP was able to do their own assessment of the level of contamination. The result of MEDEP’s assessment has led to a building environmental clean-up by Safe Harbors that is taking place today. The purpose of this Press Release is to inform the public that disposal of hazardous materials such as fluorescent bulbs containing mercury can only be done via proper disposal programs and protocols, and that the dumping of these items into the waste stream can have significant consequences, such as the temporary closure of the transfer station, which in turn disrupts the schedules of waste haulers. Additionally, under State Law, those found to have violated these environment rules are responsible for the cost of environmental clean-up, the cost for this incident is estimated to be in the tens of thousands of dollars. Lastly, the VRF Board wishes to inform the Public that it places the utmost value in environmental regulations that are in place to protect the safety of staff, people, and the environment, and that VRF will use all safeguards and follow all protocols necessary to protect its’ staff, the public and the environment.
