Business cards have a way of making a unique first impression on a prospective client or customer. We can still picture some of the most interesting, creative, and/or well-done cards that we have printed throughout the years. They stand out. They aren’t forgotten. Not only is the design of your card important, but how it feels when it enters the hand of a future partner is important, too. Below we have outlined some of the most popular finishes to any ordinary business card printing job…

Embossing: This is a method of pressing an image into paper or cardstock to create a raised, three-dimensional design. Text, logos and other images can all be formed by the embossing method. It results in a raised surface, with the design higher than the surrounding paper area, and gives a cool texture to the card.

Debossing: Kind of the opposite of embossing. Instead of a raised image, debossing is the effect that occurs with deep impression letterpress. The image or design is pressed into the paper and can be done with or without ink, known as a “blind” deboss.

Foil Stamping: Foil stamping is a finishing process that uses heat, pressure, metal dies and foil film. The foil comes in rolls in a wide assortment of colors, finishes, and optical effects. Metallic foil is most commonly seen today – particularly gold foil, silver foil, copper foil, and holographic metallic foils – but foil rolls are also available in solid colors in both glossy and matte finishes.

Spot UV and Varnishing: Ultraviolet varnishing, otherwise known as Spot UV, is used to enhance certain areas of the card, making the color appear richer, and giving it a shine with the varnish coating feel to it.

A Varnish finish is a coating of matte, silk or gloss that can be applied to a business card to protect the paper to make it last longer, as well as enhance the look and feel of the design. Also quite shiny, this type of finishing will give your card somewhat of a plastic feeling to it.

Die Cutting: Die cutting is simply the process of cutting the card into different shapes or cutting out shapes within the card. This type of finishing is has become quite popular as a way to give business cards a unique edge. Whether it be round corners, a logo shape cut out, or a series of cut-outs along the bottom, anything with a die cut is noticeably different.

Combining Print and Social Media for a Complete Marketing Strategy

Historically, businesses have operated print and social media marketing campaigns separately – What benefit would there be from combining the two or promoting one via the other? This archaic way of thinking is not the way forward and businesses are now looking at ways to combine both social media and traditional print media to create a powerful overall marketing strategy.

The Reach of Social Media
Social Media as a marketing tool is extremely powerful with the potential to reach hundreds of thousands of customers 24 hours a day. Create a business page on Facebook, share interesting stories on Twitter, post product displays on Instagram or even show design ideas on Pinterest. The possibilities are varied and if implemented correctly, social media can gain huge amounts of exposure and interest in your business.

The Quality of Print Media
Print media on the other hand may not have as far a potential reach, but it in turn allows for more targeted and direct marketing to specific demographics or regions. It allows you to reach your true customers, not just fans and provides a true return on investment. Catalogs, leaflets, brochures, business cards, special offer flyers – All of these can be printed in high quality and give potential customers a physical reminder of your business and something they can touch or interact with. Cleverly designed print media can create brand awareness and allow a company to easily reach their targeted market.

How can you Combine the two Effectively?
With the potential power of both marketing strategies, it makes sense to take their best parts and combine them together to create an effective and unique overall marketing strategy for your business. How can you do this? What ingenious ways can you use to your benefit?

One simple way could be to add links to your social media pages on your printed media – This could be a simple “Like our page” graphic for Facebook for example, or it could even be a competition where the 1000th person to like your page wins a prize. Ensure that all your printed material references your social media outlets in some way to further generate interest and exposure.

Another method could be to advertise access to exclusive content on either media. For example, you could advertise a special offer or a discount on a flyer, which is only available to customers who like your page. Or alternatively you could add a form on your social media page that allows people to request an exclusive brochure to be delivered to their address. Use one form of media to advertise the other, and give your customers a reason to interact.

Combining print media and social media marketing is by far more effective than just concentrating exclusively on one. There are many ways such as the simple ones described above in which you can implement a combined strategy – Use their strengths, be brave and try bold new ideas.

If you can think it, we can ink it!

Everything You Need to Know About Politely Dealing with Estranged Family Members at Your Wedding

You thought long and hard about extending a wedding invite to the relatives you had a falling out with and haven't spoken to in months, maybe even years. You'd wondered if inviting them would help resolve the feud? Would not inviting them make matters worse? In the end, you chose to invite them, but you're not eager to see them on a day that's supposed to be about love and unity. Following are some common-sense answers to questions you might have regarding how to treat these guests on your special day.

Do I greet them like any other guest?
Yes. Doing otherwise will likely call attention to the situation. The thing you're going to want to avoid at all costs is a rehashing of what went wrong. Your wedding is a happy day, and negativity and stress have no place there. As you'll do with a majority of your guests, giving a friendly hug and a "thanks for coming" is a perfectly fine greeting.

Should I pretend they're not there?
You asked them to come to your wedding—why would you then ignore them? It's not like you have to spend the entire reception with them but don't overlook their table. That would be rude and fuel any existing bad feelings.

Where should I seat them?
Wherever it makes the most sense, just as you'd do with other guests. Seat them with other relatives they get along with. If they're in a battle with the whole clan, seat them with non-family members at a table that's not close to the other family members.

Should I try for a reconciliation?
Not at the wedding! That's your day and you'll be too swept up in all the things on the agenda to have the time or interest in facilitating a peace treaty. Put that on your post-honeymoon to-do list instead.

Imprint Designs has been doing specialized invitations & party planning for all of those special events for over 25 years no matter what the occasion.

Do It Yourself (DIY) versus Professional Invitations: Pros and Cons to Help You Decide What’s Best for You

INVITATION STYLE AND DESIGN

The invitation you choose for your event is largely based on how formal your event is and what tone and expectations you want to set for your guests. If you are throwing an elegant affair, you’ll probably want to have an invitation that imparts the formality of the event. Fancier invitations such as letterpress, foil stamping, laser cut designs, and printing on things other than paper (like plastic or wood), are not easily done from home. Ordering invitations from a professional company, such as Imprint Designs NY, expands the range of papers and printing styles you can choose from. Do you have a specific design in mind? Imprint Designs NY is the printer to use.

QUALITY

We create invitations all day long. It’s what we do. You can expect nothing but the best quality. Layers will be cut straight, borders will be even, and the printing will be even and consistent. Not all home printers are capable of such high quality, and not all home printers can handle premium papers such as metallics, shimmers and other specialty papers. Also, if you are creating a muli-layered invitation at home, you’ll need a good paper cutter and keen eye in order to make sure your cuts are straight and your borders are even when you affix one layer to another.

And printing on envelopes is a different skill altogether. Many home printers won’t feed envelopes, so printing directly on the envelope is not an option. That leaves you with having to print your return and/or mailing address on a label, which gives a much less formal look to the invitation.

WORK INVOLVED AND SPECIAL TOOLS

There is a lot of work involved in assembling a full invitation suite, more than most people realize when they make the decision to create their own invitations. Not only do you have to purchase all the raw materials, such as paper and envelopes, but you have to also purchase whatever additional embellishments you want to add to the design.

Do you know where to shop for the supplies? Do you know how much to purchase to create all the pieces in your invitation suite? Many people don’t realize they will likely make mistakes and misprints along the way. Do you have extra materials just in case?

By ordering your invitations from Imprint Designs NY, many of these details are handled for you. And if you work with us you can get that personal and unique invitation without all the struggle of making them yourself.

TIME CONSTRAINTS

How much time do you have to put everything together? Even a small invitation job will take hours of time because you’re likely not just printing the main invitation, but are printing multiple pieces as well as envelopes. Multiply how long it takes to assemble a single invitation by 200 and you can see you may need more time to finish the job than you originally thought.

If you’re printing on specialty papers, you’ll need to leave enough time for the ink to dry. And if you’ve never done this kind of thing before, count on making mistakes. Everyone does when they’re learning a new skill. Can you afford the time to remake invitations if you make mistakes?

Ordering invitations from a professional eliminates this issue because most invitation companies publish their production times. If you need your invitations in a hurry, say within four to six weeks, it’s probably best to let a professional help you.

BUDGET

Making your own invitations won’t always save you money. That’s because large invitation companies and professional custom invitation designers can order supplies at wholesale prices and can take advantage of better pricing because they typically order in larger quantities than you can as an individual buyer.

You also have to factor in your time. Even if you plan to make your own invitations, there is a cost associated with your time. There’s also a time factor involved with searching and procuring all of the supplies and tools you’ll need, not to mention shipping costs which many people forget to factor in.

25 Ways to Thank Your Customers

Write a Note
Go old school and handwrite a note to thank your customers. It’s surprising how rarely this proven way of showing gratitude is actually used. Can you remember the last time you received a handwritten thank-you card?

Your note should be specific and personal. Write fewer notes if you need to, but maximize the impact. The extra time is worth it!

Help Customers Learn Something New
Let’s say you own a coffee shop. How cool would it be to hold regular events where you bring in experts to talk about coffee and do free tastings? The more educated your customers become, the more they will appreciate coffee, thus the more valuable they are to your business.

Run an online business? You can use your blog, webinars, whitepapers and free coaching to help people make the most of your product or service.

Not a business? I'm sure you have plenty of knowledge people would love to learn. After all life is just one big learning experience.

Wow One Customer
Spring for it, throw rational thought out the window and WOW one customer. Stories of amazing customer service overtures fill the air — it’s time to let your company be the story of the day.

Give a customer service experience so delightfully over-the-top that one lucky customer will have a great story to tell. If you’re creative enough, that customer’s family, friends, and social media acquaintances will be retelling the story for days, weeks and maybe months to come.

Spend Quality Time Together
There’s no need to break the bank with a lavish gift to thank a customer. Maybe your time is more valuable. Schedule a lunch at your customer’s office, order in for anyone that will join you, then sit and listen. Go out of your way to meet people on the front lines and hear about what they do every day.

This could be a critical learning experience for your business. Knowing your customer’s pain points can help you improve your product or service. Some companies call this “customer development,” but it’s really just good old-fashioned customer service.

Give a Great Read
Take a gander at the books that have been most influential to your company. Give one as a gift to customers. This gesture offers customers insight into your company culture and opens the lines of communication for future discussion about the book.

When your customers are businesses, this is an especially effective technique. Even if your customers aren't businesses, a good book is a good book. Some of the best books I've read weren't for business.

I know of a woman from a networking group who wrote a book about her life and has inspired countless people, many of whom she probably doesn't know.

For businesses, Help Scout regularly gives away their favorite books: The Thank You Economy, Anything You Want and How to Win Friends and Influence People. We do this not only to say “thanks,” but to explain the core values behind our product and company. Companies that embody these principles and philosophies get the most out of Help Scout.

Make sure to write a personalized note inside the book so your customer knows this is a thank you meant just for them!

Stay tuned for the rest of these awesome ways to thank your customers.

Top 13 Factors for Choosing an Event Venue

Possibly the most important decision an event planner can make that will affect the outcome of your event would be the venue that you choose. Yes, cuisine and entertainment are also important factors, but the venue sets the scene; dictates many choices related to the event; and influences the experiences of your guests probably more than any other factor. Not only will the venue influence many decisions and affect attendees' experiences, but it also consumes a large portion of most event budgets, adding more pressure to making the right decision. Event professionals on LinkedIn were asked what they would consider the most important criteria for choosing a venue for their events, and here are the most frequent responses.

1. Budget - Cost is often the main factor people use when considering or ruling out venues, and of course the price tag of renting out the venue must fit within your event budget.

2. Space specifications - This would include things like space/room capacity (including lobby and exhibitor space if you are planning a meeting or convention); load in/out amenities; and technical capabilities (like lighting, electrical, A/V, etc.).

3. Day/time availability - This factor almost goes without saying, but it's a good rule of thumb to have several day/time options in mind (or at least be somewhat flexible with day/time of the event) before you start reviewing venues so you don't immediately limit the number of venues you can consider.

4. Appropriateness for type of event and client goals - This may be the most subjective feature listed here, but it may well be the most important. And it first requires you to know precisely the needs and goals of your client so you can match up a venue with those specifications.

5. Security - An often overlooked but very important factor, this includes not only a venue's security personnel but also things like security doors and limiting venue access to only guests/attendees (because who really needs event crashers).

6. Other groups using the venue at the same time as your event - If you are planning a sit-down conference with speakers, you probably don't want a loud wedding reception next door disrupting your event. So make sure any simultaneous events at the venue (or even nearby) won't conflict with or interrupt yours.

7. Customer service - Not only does the venue need to be responsive to your needs prior to the event, but it also needs to have adequate support staff on site during the event to respond to the needs and requests of you, your staff and your attendees.

8. Travel convenience - The location of the venue needs to be conveniently located for your attendees and within a reasonable distance so as not to require excessive travel; otherwise your attendance may suffer.

9. Parking and proximity to transportation options - On-site or nearby parking options for your guests are important (and cost of parking for your guests can be a deciding factor here). In addition, proximity to airports and public transit is also important if you have many guests who aren't driving their own car to the event.

10. Accessible for persons with disabilities - This would include ramps, elevators and other amenities for those guests with physical disabilities as well as seniors who aren't as mobile.

11. Nearby amenities and entertainment options - Attendees often need or want to partake in fun activities outside of the main event, so finding a venue that has entertainment and recreation options in house or nearby can be critical to your attendance numbers.

12. Reputation - Ask other event planners and vendors regarding their experiences with the venues you are considering. In addition, look at online reviews in forums and on sites like Yelp, Wedding Wire and Trip Advisor to round out your assessment of a venue's reputation and track record.

13. Vendor restrictions - Some venues have a list of exclusive vendors that they will allow to perform work in their venue, so make sure if you are using outside vendors that you can bring them into the venue and that the venue will amicably work alongside them
