🚨 Having emergency supplies is one step. Keeping them ready is another.

Check expiration dates, review your inventory, and make sure staff know where supplies are stored and how to access them.

Preparedness takes teamwork and regular follow through. 💙

📋 When was the last time you reviewed your resident charts?

Routine audits help identify missing documents, outdated information, and follow-up needs. Make chart reviews part of your routine so your team has the information they need to support residents.

🌡️ RCFE audit reminder: Check your hot water temperature!

California Title 22, §87303(e)(2), requires hot water used by residents for personal care to be automatically regulated between:

✅ Minimum: 105°F
✅ Maximum: 120°F

Checking by touch isn’t enough to confirm the temperature. Use a thermometer at resident-use faucets.

As a practical audit routine:
• Record the temperature and location.
• Address readings outside the required range promptly.
• Recheck after adjustments to verify the correction.

Routine checks help protect residents and keep your facility prepared.

When did your team last check the hot water temperature?

📋 When was the last time you audited your staff charts?

Staff charts need attention throughout the year, not just when a licensing visit is approaching.

Routine reviews help you catch missing paperwork, track training, monitor expiring certifications, and follow up before small gaps become bigger problems.

During your next audit, review:

✅ Hiring documents and references
✅ Background clearance and facility association records
✅ Health screening and TB documentation
✅ First aid and other applicable certifications
✅ Training records and ongoing training needs

Keep a checklist, document what’s missing, and assign a follow-up date. Finding a gap is only the first step, closing it is what counts.

Organized staff charts support accountability, prepared caregivers, and quality resident care. 🏡💚

🚨 RCFE Administrators: Don’t wait until CCLD is at your door to check your facility!

Your annual visit is unannounced. Regular internal audits help you catch gaps, protect residents, and keep your team prepared year-round.

Here’s where to start:

📁 Resident charts: Review admission paperwork, medical assessments, service plans, and emergency contacts for completeness and accuracy.

👥 Staff files: Check clearances, required training, health screening documentation, and certifications.

💊 Medication safety: Review storage, labels, orders, expiration dates, and medication records. Address discrepancies promptly.

🏡 Facility walkthrough: Check exits, resident rooms, bathrooms, food supplies, and potential safety hazards.

🚨 Emergency readiness: Review your disaster plan, supplies, drill records, and staff understanding of emergency procedures.

🗣️ Staff readiness: Can your team explain how they respond to an emergency, report a concern, and protect residents’ rights?

✅ Follow through: Write down each finding, assign someone to correct it, set a deadline, and verify completion.

💡 My recommendation: Make audits part of your monthly routine. Use the current CDSS RCFE CARE Tool to guide your review.

Being prepared starts with what you do every day.

Save this checklist for your next facility self-audit! 📌
