"Naturally occurring carbon dioxide in a well, can cause changes to the water chemistry, which in turn may promote calcium carbonate encrustation. As encrustation builds up around the perforations in a well, it actually can cause an acceleration of encrustation rates, hastening the decline in flow from the well, and increasing drawdown.

Furthermore, as little as 6% entrained gas (e.g. carbon dioxide, methane, hydrogen sulfide) can reduce the efficacy of the pump, causing a loss of production up to 50%. Pumps are not designed to handle an gas-water mixture in general, and so lose a considerable amount of efficiency in the presence of entrained gases."
