Big Impact Begins With Smaller Steps

Frisco, Texas, has built its reputation for strong schools, public safety and remarkable economic growth through consistent progress and a clear vision for the future.

Today, I attended the Frisco Chamber of Commerce’s annual State of the City event, where newly elected Frisco Mayor Mark Hill spoke about unprecedented growth, economic development, and proven excellence. Those words could easily describe today’s workplace, where organizations are expanding, restructuring and adapting to new technology while leadership capacity must keep pace with the business.

Mayor Hill’s own path brought that lesson to life. Before becoming mayor, he served on the Frisco ISD Board of Trustees, including as board president.

This connection has meaning for me personally. My husband, Keith Maddox Sr. now serves as president of the Frisco ISD Board of Trustees. Watching his work up close has shown me how meaningful impact often develops one role, one responsibility and one decision at a time.

This raises a question every organization should ask. Are you creating opportunities that prepare people for greater responsibility before a position becomes available?

Stretch assignments, mentoring, feedback and visible leadership opportunities are more than development activities. They form the building blocks of succession planning.

Frisco’s growth is impressive, but the real story is the leadership built to manage change while maintaining excellence.

The next great leader in your organization may already be there. The right next step might be all they need.

New Scenery, New Perspective on Leadership | Workforce Wednesday

When was the last time you changed where you work just to change how you think?

Today, I traded my home office for a meeting room at the Frisco Public Library. I reserved the room online. Around me, people read and worked toward their own goals. The change of scenery was refreshing. T-Rex 🦖 was just hanging out.

It also gave me a chance to meet a client face to face. We sat across from each other and worked through ideas together. The conversation moved faster. Communication barriers were removed. The space brought a different energy.

Consider that your setting shapes your thinking too. A new environment can:

📍 Spark fresh ideas
📍 Build real connections
📍 Show your team you are present

Intentional in-person meetings can deepen connections and support talent growth. Presence builds trust that carries a team forward.

This week, take one meeting somewhere new. Sit across the table from someone. Notice what shifts.

When was the last time you changed your surroundings to change your leadership?

Motivational Monday | The countdown is over. San Antonio, here I come! Last week was rough, but today I’m back in the saddle.

This week, I’m on the road to the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center for the Texas Nursery & Landscape Association’s Nursery/Landscape EXPO 2026. This is year three for me, and I am just as excited as the first time. My materials are packed in the car, and I am ready to roll.

Tomorrow, I am jumping right into session one of Leadership Bootcamp 2026-2027. We are kicking off with team dynamics and emotional intelligence. To me, those are the two secret ingredients for effective leadership. They completely change how you connect with people and bring out the best in your team.

I will also be at the Expo Career Tailgate to share some practical career advice, including:

📍 How to stand out as a candidate
📍 How to write emails like a boss
📍 What employers wish you knew, but won’t tell you

When I first started talking about this event last month, it felt so far away. Time flew by, the prep work is done, and today is finally here.

This Motivational Monday, remember that the opportunities that seem far off will be here before you know it. Prepare with purpose now so when your big moment arrives, you are ready to shine.

If you are at EXPO, come say hi! Yes, past graduates, this means you. 😁 See you in San Antonio!

❓What is one opportunity you are preparing for right now?

Workforce Wednesday | Good people quit bad bosses.

Do not lose your top performers. Stop promoting people without preparing them to lead.

Promoting someone recognizes their performance. Preparing them to lead protects the entire team.

And just like that, June is gone.

Summer is officially here. Half of 2026 is done.

June showed up as a full life, not just a full calendar. There was a graduation to celebrate. Birthdays to honor. Civic duty to fulfill. Personal time to protect. And always, always time for connection.

Some months you grind. Some months you live. June was both.

That is the thing about building a life on purpose. The work and the joy do not compete. They complete each other.

Now it is July!

New month. Second half of the year. The runway is still long and the energy is ready.

We are going to keep swimming.

Welcome to the second half.

See you in San Antonio!

Your Team Cannot Afford a Leader Who Goes Silent Under Pressure

June is here. We are halfway through 2026 and the pace of change has not slowed down for anyone.

I was working with a leadership team last year that was going through a restructure. The technology was new. The roles were shifting. The manager at the top of that team went completely quiet.

No updates.
No check ins.
No acknowledgment that people were scared.

Three of their best people were gone within 90 days.

Here is what I know after 25 years in HR and people leadership: your team is not asking for all the answers. They are asking for your presence.

Recognition. Development. A conversation that says I see you and I value what you bring.

Change is uncomfortable. Poor communication makes it unbearable. Missing leadership skills turn discomfort into departure.

People leaders, if you are reading this today, your team needs you to show up on purpose this week.

Not perfectly. On purpose. Let’s transform together!

❓What is one thing you will do this week to let your team know they matter?

Motivational Monday | The Path Shifted. Who Will Lead?

When things change fast, your team does not wait for answers. They watch you.

The leaders who move forward with clarity and confidence build trust that lasts. The leaders who act in uncertainty are the ones their teams remember. 🎯

Change is here to stay.

See you at the 2026 Texas Municipal Human Resources Association (TMHRA) Annual Conference on Tuesday, May 5th. Yes, on Cinco de Mayo! 🎉

This is my fourth year on the TMHRA stage. 🍀 Four years in and I am still showing up with something new to say.

TMHRA is committed to growing and developing the HR professionals who keep our communities running. This conference is your opportunity to connect, learn, and leave better equipped than when you arrived. 💯

In my session, “How to Lead When the Path Changes,” we will focus on:

📌 Making confident decisions without perfect information

📌 Practical HR leadership strategies during constant change

📌 How to position your team to succeed even when the path is still forming

The best leaders do not have all the answers. They create momentum anyway.

That momentum starts with one decision.

❓How would your team show up if they knew you could lead them through any change?
