Heading into the last full week before Labor Day, here's what's actually moving underneath the surface.

New NMFC density rules mean a pallet that's off by a few inches gets automatically reclassified, and agents often don't find out until the invoice arrives weeks later. Meanwhile, truckload freight keeps cascading into LTL, which means more shipments, more touches, and more exception handling on the same book of business.

Intermodal keeps quietly taking share from truckload, and it's worth checking before you default to a truck.

Our approach: price intermodal first on any lane where transit time allows, use it as a pressure release when truckload capacity tightens, and always set expectations with agents about the timing tradeoff so it doesn't catch anyone off guard.

The cheapest lane is the one you actually check.

Two things worth watching in freight this week.

Q2 GDP's second estimate comes out Tuesday, and the first estimate already showed private demand accelerating, nearly double the pace from Q1.

Meanwhile, truckload capacity is easing off its highs but still running tight, and intermodal keeps quietly picking up share thanks to a real cost advantage, without hitting capacity limits of its own.
