This idea gets expressed often-but it’s important to finish the thought-
ADHD doesn’t turn off when school ends and if all expectations go out the window, it can actually be counterproductive. Routines, expectations, and feedback are the cornerstones for setting your ADHD kiddo up for success no matter how old your kiddo is! It doesn’t have to be a total free for all and it doesn’t have to be completely rigid. Maintain key supports like behavior strategies and expectations, make sure they have responsibilities (this builds self esteem AND structure), praise them and check in with them often! Summer is a great opportunity to focus on executive functioning skills!

I remind parents who are struggling with tough behaviors at home that what it looks like on the outside is nothing compared to what it feels like on the inside. This is so very important to keep in mind as you step in to help your ADHD/Autistic kiddos regulate and learn ways to manage situations and emotions. If we match their energy, it will only intensify the situation. Parenting extreme emotions is difficult, however, if you understand the WHY (function) behind the behavior, you can more meaningfully help your soothe child, get their needs met and eventually help them to help themselves. Parenting is not about controlling your kid’s behavior and more about the strategies you use to show them the way. If you are struggling with tough parenting situations, reach out-I would love to help you gain some parenting wins! Let’s schedule a call and see how we can work together! XOXO Shannon. Low demand parenting sends the message to your child that: a) you don’t have faith in their ability to do hard things, and b) the world will adjust for them. Instead, why don’t we slowly lead them to lean into their abilities and focus on their strengths? Why don’t we teach them the benefits of stepping outside of their comfort zone? Why don’t we uncover the barriers that are impeding their progress? I’m not suggesting you use harsh, punitive or didactic strategies. I’m just suggesting that if we show them their abilities and teach them to navigate a variety of situations and personalities, growth will happen, confidence will explode and your child will be ready for the world! XOXO Shannon. Make sure you are following me! Like this post, comment below or send me a DM so we can talk about your kiddo!
