Last week we were visited by 25 rising freshmen attending in Washington DC. Since 2017 we have collaborated with Dr Heidi Elmendorf and her science class to study what’s happening molecularly and genetically in our soils, vines, juice and wine. They study enzymes, microbes, yeasts, their DNA and environmental interactions and how each may play a role influencing flavors and textures in our grapes and wines. Each class builds upon the previous classes’ research. These young adults, many from hard walks of life, but all with high spirits, promise and hope, come from all around the globe; El Salvador, Honduras, Ethiopia, Syria, South Sudan, Nigeria, and from 18 states including Utah, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts plus Washington DC to name a few. I am proud and privileged to meet them each summer and play a small part in their successes as they develop and work to become our some day future leaders.

After a sluggish first leaf in droughty 2024, this second leaf Nebbiolo is doing much better in wet start 2025. We also fed them compost which really helped things along. The second shot shows a few rows just above the composted rows that didn’t get the compost. They’re about to though.

Happy and humbled to be included in a very informative article written by Eric Asimov of The New York Times, delving into the Virginia wine world. It scratches just below the surface though, as there are many others not mentioned who are also striving to push this industry forward and upward.

It also represents me alone responsible for what Glen Manor Vineyards has accomplished. Far, far from reality. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention some of those who have been instrumental along this crazy path.

From my first industry job working for Dr Tony K. Wolf in Virginia Tech’s experimental vineyard, to 13 vintages under Jim Law’s guidance at Linden, to all of the US and European Vignerons I’ve had the pleasure to meet and learn from, to my parents who were both partners in GMV and always supporters of everything I have ever sought to do in my life, to the Morales family working tirelessly in our vineyards since 2006, to all of my former and current vineyard, cellar and tasting room staff. And especially to my wife Kelly, without whom I’d be still lost and wandering about aimlessly. It really does take a village.

Some things are best left alone, unexplained, unexplored. “It’s what it is.” Why bother? Accept, react, make note, move forward and find the silver lining.

I ventured into my vineyards this morning, after not venturing yesterday and to my surprise, discovered that flowering had begun in our Cabernet Franc and Petit Manseng. Historically, flowering begins around June first.

This year’s budbreak date was average. Our soils were very dry and it’s been a rather cool spring thus far. After two droughty years the vines have been sluggish in their growth but…I delve too long. I have work to do. This could lead to an early harvest or even better, a long growing and ripening season. Time and circumstance will tell.
