Yesterday was a great day of strategic work with the Foundation for Appalachian Virginia in beautiful Abingdon, VA.

As FAV continues to grow its role across the region, our work focused on an important question: How do you build an organization that is equipped to deliver on an ambitious mission for the long term?

We spent time working through board governance, the Board–CEO relationship, strategic priorities, organizational capacity, and how goals, resources, and accountability all connect back to mission.

Good strategic planning is about more than identifying what an organization wants to accomplish. It is also about making sure the governance, leadership, resources, and systems are in place to actually get there.

Appalachian Virginia has tremendous assets and equally significant challenges. It was rewarding to help FAV think through how it can continue building the organizational foundation needed to make a lasting impact across the region.

Proud of the work we are doing alongside organizations that are thinking seriously about their role in the future of their communities.

The best strategic plans don't start with answers. They start with the right conversations.
Last week, the Theresa's Research released MBC DART (Discovery & Accelerating Research Together): Insight to Impact: a strategic action plan shaped by the voices of people living with metastatic breast cancer, caregivers, clinicians, researchers, advocates, industry, and nonprofit leaders.
Pinnacle Strategies, LLC was honored to help convene and facilitate this work.
During this process one thing became clear: the challenge wasn't a lack of ideas. It was creating the space for diverse stakeholders to move beyond individual perspectives and build shared solutions.
That's where meaningful change happens.
Too often, organizations invest months developing strategies that never gain traction because the people expected to implement them weren't part of building them. We believe there's a better way.
At Pinnacle, we believe facilitation is more than managing a meeting. It's about bringing together the right voices, building trust, asking better questions, and transforming insight into action.
We're grateful to Josh Newby, Theresa's Research and every patient, caregiver, advocate, clinician, researcher, and partner who contributed their expertise and lived experience. Your willingness to challenge assumptions and collaborate made this work stronger.
If your organization is tackling a complex challenge, don't start by asking, "What's the solution?" Start by asking, "Who needs to help create it?"
We invite you to read the report and share your biggest takeaway. The lessons extend far beyond metastatic breast cancer.

Yesterday we had the opportunity to spend part of the day working with the Howard County Workforce Development Board on an important shift, moving the board from a compliance mindset toward strategic leadership.

Workforce boards are often required to focus heavily on statutory responsibilities and program oversight. But their real potential lies in shaping regional talent strategies, aligning partners, and helping employers and jobseekers navigate a rapidly changing labor market.

Helping boards make that transition has become a core part of the work we’re doing at Pinnacle Strategies, LLC . We are grateful for the chance to support workforce development entities, community organizations, and government partners as they think more strategically about the systems that support our communities.

Something to think about this Sunday...

A Fence or an Ambulance

Twas a dangerous cliff, as they freely confessed,
though to walk near its crest was so pleasant;
but over its terrible edge there had slipped
a duke and full many a peasant.
So the people said something would have to be done,
but their projects did not at all tally;
some said, 'Put a fence 'round the edge of the cliff, '
some, 'An ambulance down in the valley.'

But the cry for the ambulance carried the day,
for it spread through the neighbouring city;
a fence may be useful or not, it is true,
but each heart became full of pity
for those who slipped over the dangerous cliff;
And the dwellers in highway and alley
gave pounds and gave pence, not to put up a fence,
but an ambulance down in the valley.

'For the cliff is all right, if you're careful, ' they said,
'and if folks even slip and are dropping,
it isn't the slipping that hurts them so much
as the shock down below when they're stopping.'
So day after day, as these mishaps occurred,
quick forth would those rescuers sally
to pick up the victims who fell off the cliff,
with their ambulance down in the valley.

Then an old sage remarked: 'It's a marvel to me
that people give far more attention
to repairing results than to stopping the cause,
when they'd much better aim at prevention.
Let us stop at its source all this mischief, ' cried he,
'come, neighbour's and friends, let us rally;
if the cliff we will fence, we might almost dispense
with the ambulance down in the valley.'
