We are deeply saddened to share that wildland firefighter Nathan Matthews, 43, of Lincoln, Nebraska, died Friday from injuries sustained while responding to the Knowles Fire in western Colorado on June 27. Nate had been receiving medical care for burn injuries sustained during the incident.

Nate was a dedicated member of the Rifle Helitack crew out of Colorado and was one of five firefighters involved in a burnover during initial attack operations. Three firefighters – Emily Barker, Nick Hutcherson, and Sydney Watson – died at the scene.

Please keep Nate’s family and the wildland fire community in your thoughts. Information regarding memorial services for Nate will be released at a later date.

It is with heavy hearts that we extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, crew members, and the entire wildfire community following the tragic loss of a helicopter pilot during operations on the Gold Mountain Fire in Colorado.

Wildland firefighting is an inherently dangerous profession, and every member of the team—whether on the ground or in the air—plays a vital role in protecting lives, communities, and our natural resources. Today, we mourn the loss of one of those dedicated professionals who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to others.

Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragedy as they continue their mission under incredibly difficult circumstances.

Rest easy. Your service, sacrifice, and commitment will never be forgotten.

🇺🇸 Happy 4th of July from Lower Valley Professional Firefighters Local 5265! 🇺🇸

We hope everyone has a safe, fun, and memorable Independence Day with family and friends.

As you celebrate, please remember that current fire restrictions remain in effect. Fireworks and open burning are prohibited, and with the dry conditions we’re experiencing, it only takes one spark to start a wildfire.

Help us celebrate by keeping the fireworks to the professionals—and not giving us an unexpected invitation to your backyard BBQ. We’d much rather spend today waving at you in a parade than meeting you at 2:00 a.m. because something caught fire.

To our incredible community: thank you. Over the past several days, your generosity, encouragement, donations, meals, kind words, and unwavering support for firefighters and everyone impacted by the wildfires have been truly overwhelming. Your support has meant more than words can express, and we’re proud to serve a community that continually shows up for one another when it matters most.

Have a wonderful Independence Day, celebrate responsibly, look out for your neighbors, and help us keep the Grand Valley safe.

- Food items- due to health and federal contract regulations

Note: Local food bank donations tend to decrease when the public chooses to donate their food to fire camp - we feed our assigned fire crews three meals a day including snacks. Please consider donating to your local food banks as they support displaced evacuees.

The Best Suggestions:
- Join or support your local volunteer fire department or emergency organizations- they need your generosity since they are the first responders in many cases.
- Donate to local charitable organizations like the Red Cross.
