**PROBABLE SCAM WARNING**
I received this email through my website today:
"I thought you would like to know, it looks like you've misspelled the word "Abilty" on your website. Silly mistakes can ruin your site's credibility. In the past I've used a tool like SpellingScan.com to keep mistakes off my website.
-Scott Matthews Sr."
(sent from [email protected])
It seemed fishy to me, especially because he didn't say which page has the misspelled word. If he's just a guy trying to be helpful, why not give me the sentence and the page so I can fix it? So I figured he's probably a guy who promotes the site and gets money for new customers.
I did a quick internet search and it turns out "Scott Matthews Sr." is a very busy man!!! He has left similar messages on comment threads and websites all over the place. So is he a man? I'm thinking he's a bot.
A few bloggers say spellingscan.com is collecting credit card and personal info for fraudulent intent, or that the site downloads harmful programs on your computer, but I couldn't find that info anywhere totally trustworthy and verifiable. Still, better safe than sorry.
I won't be using SpellingScan.com, and just wanted to make my clients and colleagues aware of the potential risk here.
Geesh. There's always a new scam out there. Be vigilant!
BTW, I find errors on my own websites all the time, so it's highly probably that I have, indeed, misspelled "Abilty" and several other words. If YOU you find a mistake, definitely tell me about it!
