🌊 HAUNTED SPACE SPOTLIGHT: Lake Lanier, Georgia
The Drowned and the Damned

Beneath the glassy surface of Georgia’s Lake Lanier lies a graveyard of forgotten things. Entire towns—homes, churches, even cemeteries—were flooded to create this manmade lake in the 1950s. And ever since, the waters have never rested.

Locals say Lake Lanier takes people.

Swimmers dragged under by unseen hands. Boats capsizing in calm weather. Cars plunging off bridges with no explanation. Some say the lake is cursed. Others say it’s haunted by what lies below.

“I was swimming out by the dam,” said one survivor. “The water went still—dead still. Then I felt a grip around my ankle, cold as ice. I couldn’t move. Couldn’t scream. Just… sinking. Then suddenly, I was on the shore. Alone.”

Divers who’ve gone down report unnerving encounters—mannequins placed like sentinels in the deep, entire structures preserved by the cold water, and eerie silences where no fish dare swim.

And then there’s the Lady of the Lake.
Seen drifting in a blue dress, soaked and silent, just beneath the surface. She disappears when approached. Sometimes, people hear her calling their names from the water at night.

More than 700 people have died in the lake.
And every year, it claims more.

Would you swim in the waters of a town buried alive?

An old one, but a good one.

The owner of this photo explained, ‘This was taken at a McDonald’s. At the time, we thought our daughter was alone in the playground. The face on the left wasn’t visible when I took the picture. Later, when we asked her who was next to her in the photo, she replied, ‘That’s my imaginary friend, Beto.’’”
