The MLH crew handled a dangerous, technically demanding job with precision and care from the first climb to the last log.

Large limbs or the entire tree can drop suddenly as decay advances, especially in wind or storms. This can crush animals underneath, destroy nests or dens inside the tree, or injure creatures using it as a perch or shelter. Oaks tend to shed smaller decaying pieces first rather than massive limbs all at once, but a big tree still carries risk.

A 250-year-old white oak in the Verminators Forest had been dying ever since a lightning strike years earlier. What was once a magnificent tree had become a serious hazard to the homes around it and to the wildlife that lived in and around it.

The edge of the Verminators Forest looks empty now.

That big open patch of ground used to be filled by a 250-year-old white oak, and the sudden absence of its canopy and shade is noticeable. The MLH crew did a thorough job — the stump is gone, the debris is cleared, and the site is ready for whatever comes next.

Planting a new white oak is a good idea. It won’t replace the old giant anytime soon, but a young white oak will eventually provide the same kind of wildlife habitat, acorns, and shade that the original tree did. White oaks are excellent for birds, squirrels, and a whole range of insects, so it fits the Verminators Forest well.

Give it time and care, and in a few decades that new tree will start to fill the space again. Nice way to close the chapter on the old one and start the next.

A professional tree-removal job isn’t finished until the stump is dealt with.

That white-oak stump is going to be a beast to grind. After a tree this size, the remaining root flare and butt can be several feet across and extremely dense. Once it’s out of the ground (or ground down), the wood itself has a lot of potential.

Old-growth white oak like this often has beautiful grain, tight rings, and that classic golden-brown color. A big, character-filled slab or even the stump itself could make a stunning live-edge table or rustic piece of furniture. A lot of people save the best sections exactly for that reason.

It would be a nice way to keep a little piece of that 250-year-old tree around instead of just seeing it disappear.

The MLH crew has already done the hard, dangerous part; the last step is just cleaning up the stump so the yard is back to normal.
