It's a rite of passage in the South, especially in the country, when the cicadas start singing you grab a coffee can and a long stick and you head out with your friends and find as many cicada shells as possible. If you are lucky enough to find one actually emerging from its shell then that was enough to keep you mesmerized for a a bit longer( much to your parents relief I'm sure). This summertime ritual has gone by the wayside along with crawdad fishing and hand cranked ice cream makers but for those lucky enough to have been on the hunt, we would love to hear from you.
*a word of caution......cicadas are a favorite treat of another lover of hot Texas weather......the copperhead .
