So many communities struggle to offer enough affordable and quality child care for the parents who need it.

This afternoon we celebrated our chamber friends at Lightbridge Academy Gaithersburg at their groundbreaking celebration.

We heard heartfelt speeches forum founders Alex and Dave that show what social business is all about- transformation at multiple levels.

The individual level where we’re child will receive not only education but social enrichment so they can become the best versions of themselves.

The family level as parents who struggle will now get the support and respite they need in a location that has high need for childcare options.

The community will benefit from the direct relationship with Lightbridge Foundation with the first $1,00 cash donation being given today at ground breaking. (Truly incredible!)

The connection and commitment form day 1 to be a business that supports the community shows how they will be transformational over time.

So excited to have been able to be part of the celebration.

Karen described her story of losing multiple jobs, experiencing homelessness, and feeling hopeless. I talked to Karen after the event and thanked her for so bravely sharing her story of how Housing Unlimited, Inc. helped her find affordable stable housing.

During her speech she reminded us about how increasingly difficult it is to find affordable housing in Montgomery County. Especially for people living with mental illness who may need additional supports and treatment.

We had an amazing spread at the Bethesda Country Club where the room was inspired to give by the stories of Housing Unlimited, Inc.'s work.

The best part was chatting with my table mate Sebastian Johnson - candidate for Maryland State Delegate in District 19. We got deep into how the funding ecosystem could better support communities and nonprofits. If you're in District 19, I highly recommend you check him out - definitely gets my endorsement for strategic thinking and innovative ideas.

Thanks to Housing Unlimited, Inc. for a fantastic evening and our wonderful partner Heidi Webb for the seat! Excited for my silent auction win- a new Oura Ring that fit just perfectly!

"This has inspired me to be more driven with a purpose, to volunteer in my community as educator and mentor."

"To incorporate charitable giving into my business more consistently as a way to attract, retain, and promote relationships with both current and potential clients."

"Be VERY intentional about the impact of change in community I want to see from my giving."

These were the responses when I asked attendees at my Small Business Big Impact talk this week at the ignITe Hub.

Business owners and community members came together to discuss how business can benefit the community and how that can increase business value. We had a lovely meal and shared connection through dialogue.

As my talk progressed I saw that the crowd latched onto the deeper purpose for my talk- to challenge folks to take action by thinking critically about HOW and WHY they give.

I invited the room to get more consistent with their giving, measure their outcomes, and use marketing it to amplify the work. More business profit fuels more good which CAN fuel more profit to do more good.

This is what strategic growth really means, turning your business and marketing strategies into things that have far reaching benefits.

As I said real change comes with taking action. What actions can you take to use your Dollars, People, Time or Donations to build legacy and do good? 💭

You can watch the full talk on YouTube thanks to the ignITeHub! Special thanks to Kimberly Bloch Rincan and her team for a lovely evening! If you haven't checked out their Fireside Chat series, come back for next season!

Thanks Orville Haye, Justin Volman, Jeanne Ellinport, Michele Joseph, Colin Fraser, and Jerry Ellis for stopping by! Hope you learned something new!

Things that help (aka protective factors) aren’t always obvious, but they’re powerful.

Think about it—how many of us had a mentor growing up? Or later, a business mentor guiding us through tricky decisions? Maybe you joined a program, applied for a scholarship, or found a supportive community along the way.

Those weren’t just “nice to haves.” Those things are known as protective factors or tools that helped minimize risks and set you up for positive outcomes.

Your programs, initiatives, and support systems are doing this too. Even if you didn’t realize it. 🤯

Every time you create access, guidance, or opportunity, you’re building resilience and helping people navigate challenges before they become setbacks.

That’s how you're creating lasting impact every day. You'll never know how many ways you are transforming the people and causes you serve by simply showing up to work today.

➡️ As you take a moment to breathe today, think about: what protective factors are you creating and who’s benefiting?

Big brands are unapologetic in their use of 'social good' to make money. So why are you scared of telling people you donated to a good cause?

Sponsorships, strategic partnerships, and non-cash donations are great ways to build your business while making a difference.

Every week you see another event organized "with a purpose" and local businesses listed as sponsors.

The thing that's missing is the secret sauce big corporations know about- marketing your impact.

But before you can get to marketing, you need a structured way to make an impact again and again.

That's exactly what I'm giving you in my next talk, Small Business Big Impact: 4 Ways to Elevate Through Giving.

Whether you're an individual who just likes to donate or a small business building a brand- you do not want to miss this easy to follow formula for success.

I taught one of my referral partners this framework and walked him through this process and he was able to create his very first impact report in one day showcasing not only what he's accomplished but also where he's heading.

Artifacts for a business that is looking to grow and eventually position for sale are priceless. These are the things that bring real VALUE to your business long-term.

If you're out here on the streets every day making a difference and you don't know how to systematize your work- you need to join us May 4th!

Plus if you're in you can join us for dinner before we chat!

See you in Rockville!

I love people with high vibrational energy and this woman is full of light! Meet Audrey Awasom, owner of Luminary Branded Solutions. Recently we met for lunch and had a wonderful conversation about being women business owners, our backgrounds as women of color growing a business, and how we help brands amplify their value.

Every time I meet someone who sparkles I'm immediately interested in what they do and how it's different from everything else in the niche.

I was pleasantly surprised when Audrey joined our Mastermind Direct connect and I got to see how consistently she shows up with a smile ready to help. She even donated gift bags for a recent nonprofit event for our chamber of commerce. 🎁

Check out her work and see if there are any enticing promotional items for your business or nonprofits. I was excited by how easy to browse the merchandise is and to learn when I buy from Luminary some of the proceeds goes back to nonprofit organizations in the community.

People aren’t “over” equity. But people are choosing to be quieter about it.

And I get it. But I also don't get it at the same time.

Things feel uncertain right now. Funding is shifting. The urge to change your language because anything DEI feels loaded.

And sometimes it’s easier to just not say anything than risk saying the wrong thing or even putting the people you serve in harm's way.

But no one is talking about the fact that staying quiet doesn’t make inequity disappear.

It just makes it easier to ignore and perpetuates harmful cycles for future generations.

It’s not that you don’t care, many of us recognize this is happening all around us.

Most of the leaders I work with care deeply.

Things feel harmful and uncertain right now. Everyone is looking for a way to keep serving and secure aligned funding.

As you're looking for the right money, clients, and even grants- make sure you're clear about HOW equity is embedded throughout your work. No matter what words you use, you can still describe:

☑️ Who’s benefiting from this? (and how you are ensuring the right needs are met for the right people)
☑️ Who’s making the decisions? (and how you're including representative voices/perspectives)
☑️ Who has the power here? (and how power is shared)
☑️ Who’s not in the room? (and how you will get them there)

These seem like simple questions. But they’ll tell you a lot about whether your work is actually aligned.

Because sustainability isn’t about saying everything perfectly.

Over the next few weeks I'll share more sustainability lessons from our Scale + Sustain accelerator and our fabulous speakers. Follow along let us know what you've been doing about equity in the comments.

Keeping up with tech can be a bit scary for the non-tech savvy. That's why Nonprofit Montgomery's Tech Cafe is the place to be for nonprofit leaders looking for actionable solutions.

From data collection to donor tracking and marketing- everything requires some tech platform these days. And ALLLLL of them have Artificial Intelligence (AI) integrations and automations. 🤯🤢

Don't worry- you don't need to do all the things. Just come to Tech Cafe and we'll show you the right tools and the right uses for them. You'll even get a deep dive into AI in our panel discussion.

Drop by for both my sessions:

10:15-11 AM - Tools that Support the Work: Aligning tech, workflow, and nonprofit reality.

In this session I'm giving you the DL on three major platforms in my tech stack that I use daily to help my nonprofit clients. I'll cover use cases, demo the platforms, and give you my words of wisdom on how to navigate subscription costs.

11:15 AM–12:00 PM Panel Discussion: AI with Intention: Balancing Innovation, Risk, and Mission

On this panel I'll share how I use AI and the guardrails I use to help clients stay on track with integrating AI into their ecosystem. The panel covers the benefits, risks, and potential impacts of using AI in your nonprofit.

Like I said, tech can be a non-techy's least favorite thing. But you don't need to be a nerd for this event - you might want to bring your laptop though!

See you April 30th at Montgomery College East County Education Center!

The funding you used to rely on? That's probably looking a lot different these days.

That means we have to do things differently as well.

You can’t show up for your mission if you’re running on empty.

Here’s the bigger picture: it’s not just about money. It’s about burnout.

I work with leaders all the time trying who are to do a million things at once and running themselves ragged.
What's happening in our communities from the funding rollercoaster? Their needs are shifting and many organizations are facing funding gaps.

Things like one-off programs and short-term fixes aren't enticing to funders in this hyper-competitive landscape.

So how do you stand out? By offering solutions that last, that actually transform, and that let you lead without burning out.

Take a minute and ask yourself: which parts of my work are built to last, and which are just temporary fixes fueled by the funding rollercoaster?
