When somebody decides to close a business, there is usually pressure to move quickly.

I understand that.

But one of the worst things you can do is start selling assets without first understanding what you have.

The first step should be an inventory.

What equipment is owned outright?

What is financed?

What is leased?

What belongs to customers?

What has titles?

What equipment is needed to remove the other equipment?

What has strong resale value?

What may be worth more as part of a package?

What is going to be difficult or expensive to remove?

Those questions matter because the order of the liquidation matters.

If you sell the easy, valuable assets first without a plan, you can end up with a building full of low-value property, removal problems, and no equipment left to help clean it out.

A good liquidation works backward from the finish line.

How do we get from a fully operating business to an empty property, paid seller, and completed project?

Then we build the sale around that.

That is very different from just putting things up for auction.

If you are hiring someone to sell a meaningful amount of equipment or an entire business, I would ask a lot more than, “What is your commission?”

Start with:

How are you going to market these assets?

Who do you believe the actual buyers are?

Who is going to inspect and catalog the equipment?

How are known defects handled?

Who answers buyer questions?

What happens with titles?

Who manages payment and loadout?

How will removal be handled?

When will I receive my settlement?

And most importantly:

Who is responsible for the project from start to finish?

A low commission means very little if the assets are poorly presented, marketed to the wrong buyers, or the seller ends up managing half the project themselves.

An auction company should be more than a website where bids are collected.

For larger sales, you are hiring somebody to manage an asset-disposition project.

Make sure they can actually manage it.
