I remember the day I read Exodus 34:6-7 and got so angry that I threw my Bible against the wall and yelled, "Bu****it!"

The verse says that God does not leave the guilty unpunished (okay, cool I guess), but he also punishes the children and their children for the sins of their parents to the third and fourth generation (say what?).

I don't know about you, but I don't see how a loving and forgiving Father God can do this.

Especially not with MY family.
I mean, let a grudge go, man.

But it doesn't work that way.
At least not in fundamentalist religion.

People can say how great and good and loving the big man upstairs is, but the book and the sermons paint a much different story.

And what people in the Church don't understand is that this is why SO many people are leaving in droves.

It is the very foundational beliefs of high-controlling, fundamentalist religions that make people want to leave.

Things like being punished for what other people do.
Or for who you are.

Or telling you that you're bad and a sinner just for being born.
I don't think so.

Doubling down on these teachings creates more non-believers than one might think, but the only answers you're given are:

* Pray more
* Read the Bible more
* Talk to Jesus more
* Put away Worldly things
* Satan must be tempting you

Thanks, but if you're like me, you've been there, done that.

It's not like I wasn't regularly reading, attending Sunday school classes. or studying and praying daily. And I'm sure you've done all these things, too.

So what is the answer?

Be still and connect with YOU.
Your voice. Yourself.

Listen to who you are.
Listen for the REAL small, still voice within.

And see where it goes.
What it says.

Because I can tell you one thing: No real, loving Divine will punish you and your children and your children's children just because someone up your family tree did something they didn't like.

You're an incredible person, deserving of love and respect from a Source that actually cares about you and wants the best for you.

Not one that is controlling, judgemental, or vindictive. Because that's not a real God - that's just a horror story that people made up to scare you.

Want to connect with your truth? The 2024 Tarot Therapy Planner for healing from religious trauma and childhood abuse will be available next week.

A LOT of spiritual practices are pretty much the same as you find in fundamentalist religions. They just add a hint of flavor and change the words up a bit. Be careful out there. πŸ˜†

Remember back when Doreen Virtue was in the Spiritual communities and creating Oracle Decks and books? Eventually she created a Tarot Deck (which I own), which was marketed as the only "100% pure, gentle, and safe deck" and basically the same as an ad for a laxative.

At the time when people mentioned her or brought her up around me, I would tell them that she felt VERY off to me, and very fear-based, and that they might want to do more research or just observe and reserve judgement.

I also told people about how she talked about how when she first found Tarot cards she threw out all the "bad" cards, and even though there were only about 8 or 14 left, she still got "completely accurate readings" with them. Of course, that's not really possible when you refuse to look at 90% of reality.

Around 2007, Doreen did a complete about face and joined Christian fundamentalism.

She has since denounced Tarot, saying that it is inspired by Demons, and is completely on the side of "jesus is the Savior and the only way."

If you haven't seen just how far she's gone off the deep end, I added a couple of images from one of her recent Instagram posts below.

I don't often publicly call someone out, but I think this is a good example on why it's SO important to talk about underlying fundamentalist beliefs that pervade not just spirituality, but every aspect of our culture.

As people get older, they are especially susceptible to falling back into these cults and narrow, limited ways of thinking.

The same thing happened to Salt of Salt n Pepa back in the day (her real name is Cheryl James, and you can find lots of info about it including an article called, "Let's Talk About God, Baby" on Christianity Today.

Much of these fundamentalist beliefs aren't as overt as these examples. It's easy to point at people who are wildly out with their "this is the only truth" ways and think they are so different than the rest of us.

But what I have discovered is that so many of my clients have similar underlying beliefs, even if they weren't raised fundamentalist like I was.

So if you aren't confident, aren't doing well in your life, feel like something is missing, or are afraid of dying, it's part of what needs to be examined.

You'll see me talk a lot about God, Jesus, and the Bible in many of my posts and articles.

That's because it NEEDS to be okay to talk about these triggering ideas with spiritual people.

We have to separate what we were told is true in order to connect to the real Divine Source and create our own relationship, experience, and path.

I just pray that yours doesn't include falling back into the lies of fundamentalist beliefs, of being told that you are less than, or being harassed into believing only one path is true.

You deserve better than that. As does Doreen, Salt, and all the other people who have been duped by controlling religions.

I came across a post yesterday that said, "I am nothing without God." It had hundreds of likes and amens, and it made me so sad.

I just wanted to hug the woman who posted and say, "Oh, but you are something. You really, really are."

Recovering from fundamentalism can be a long and difficult process, especially when you grew up with it as your entire identity.

Its sneaks into your beliefs and every aspect of your life in so many ways. It affects your:

1. Physical Environment (where and how you choose to live, even to how much you own, the quality and expense of what you are "allowed" to have, and even how you decorate.

2. Self-Care and Recreation. How you care for yourself and how you spend your free time.

3. Health and Wellness. How you treat your physical body. Are you denying and punishing yourself? Do you accept all of yourself?

4. Love and Romance. How you relate to your spouse if you have one, dating issues, sexuality and pleasure (and whether or not you are even allowed to feel pleasure).

5. Career and Business. What you chose for a vacation, what you do to create income, and if you're allowed to do what you really love.

6. Spiritual and Personal Growth. This is the work many of us are constantly engaged in.

7. Family and Friends. Can you have friendships, even with people who have different beliefs?

8. Finances and Wealth. How much money you are allowed to make (the money is the root of all evil can keep you poor!), should you tithe, what should you give away. Money affects every aspect of your life and is hugely important.

What if you knew you were okay and good and could enjoy every aspect of your life, event without God? πŸ’–

I learned a surprising amount of Pagan traditions when I was a fundamentalist Christian. Basically all of the practices, rituals, and traditions for the holidays were taken directly from Paganism.

So why all the hate towards Pagans? It doesn't make sense when you are literally using all of their stories and celebrations.

May Day, though, was a weird one. I didn't like wearing dresses and I didn't understand why the girls should dance around a pole. I didn't know until years later that it's a fertility tradition.

No wonder all the parents and the guys in the stands watching felt extra super creepy. 😐☠️
