Boring? Not around here!

Today’s Field Friday takes us underground — literally!

When you see one of our crews running a boring machine down the road, it might look like the simple part is just pushing a machine through the ground. But there’s a LOT happening behind the scenes. Pictured here is one of our Combo Techs Danny Morgan

Before that fiber ever reaches your home, our crews are:
🔹 Planning the bore path
🔹 Locating existing utilities
🔹 Setting up and positioning the boring machine
🔹 Drilling underground beneath roads, driveways, and yards
🔹 Tracking the drill head and making sure we're staying on course
🔹 Pulling conduit and fiber into place
🔹 Connecting it all back to our network

And of course… there’s plenty of dirt, mud, sweat, and problem-solving along the way!

That’s the part of your internet connection you don’t always see.

From the boring machine in the field to the fiber coming into your home, our crews are putting in the work behind the scenes to keep you connected.

Last week a few of our plant technicians and managers had the opportunity to attend ISE EXPO in Nashville, Tennessee.

It was a great opportunity to learn, share ideas, and explore new products.

What you see in the field is just part of the connection. Behind every fiber, splice, piece of equipment, and service call is a team working behind the scenes to keep you connected.

Technical Tuesday: Before Fiber, There Was the Switchboard

Ever wonder what it was like to operate a telephone system before the Internet… before fiber optic… and before everything was automated?

It started with a switchboard.

When someone picked up their telephone, the call didn’t automatically find its destination. Instead, a telephone operator would answer and ask where you wanted to be connected. The operator would then physically connect your call to the appropriate line using the plugs and cords on the switchboard.

You wanted to call someone?
An operator connected you.

You wanted to connect to another line?
An operator made the connection.

You needed help?
You talked to the person sitting at the switchboard.

This was the technology that helped build the foundation of what would eventually become Home Communications.

Long before we were delivering high-speed internet over fiber optic cables, communication depended on people, copper wires, and a whole lot of hands-on work.

Today, a phone call can travel across the country in milliseconds. Back then, someone might have physically connected your call.

That's quite a technological journey.

This week’s Field Friday is highlighting one of our employees who wears two hats.

During the day, Ted Regehr manages our Security & Surveillance team, helping keep our customers and communities connected and protected.

When the workday is over, he trades in his work gear for a whistle and heads to the field to coach.

We’re proud to have employees like Ted who give their time and energy both at work and in our communities.

Throwback Thursday

90 years ago, Miles and Blanche Baldwin were laying the foundation for what would become Home Communications.

If we could have asked them in 1933 where technology would be in 2026, what do you think they would have imagined?

From the early days of communication to fiber optics, high-speed internet, streaming, smartphones, and technology that can connect us from virtually anywhere — the world has changed more than they probably could have imagined.

But one thing has remained the same: connecting people.

Today, we’re proud to look back at our first generation and founders, Miles and Blanche Baldwin, and the vision they started 90 years ago.

Here’s to 90 years of connecting our communities — and who knows where the next 90 years will take us!
