This is shocking to even think about but you need to know.
There have been individuals joining social media support groups, or even posing as lactation professionals online. They are requesting photos or videos of parents nursing, pumping, or photos of their ni***es for “evaluation”, or to check fl**ge sizing. Instead, they have been accused of uploading that content to adult websites.
Here is what you need to know. Lactation Consultants are healthcare providers and bound by healthcare privacy laws. A legitimate professional should NEVER ask you to send videos or pictures over social media or size you in their DMs or over Messenger. Even if they are actual professionals, those platforms are not secure and could be hacked, and your images could end up in the wrong hands.
Here’s what to look for. A healthcare professional should never assess or size you through social media. All images and pictures should go through a HIPAA-compliant healthcare platform or a HIPAA-compliant email. Some apps like Spruce allow HIPAA-compliant texting. If you’re not sure, ask your provider.
