Employer-provided childcare may deserve a second look.

The federal credit can now be worth up to $500,000 a year, or $600,000 for eligible small businesses, and a larger share of qualified expenses can count toward the credit.

As summer winds down, think about what the last few months looked like for your employees. If childcare was a recurring challenge, this may be a good time to explore whether providing some form of childcare support could make sense.

The numbers are different now, so an idea that didn't work financially a few years ago may be worth revisiting.

Before you call your accountant for an IRS document, check your Business Tax Account.

The IRS has expanded the platform quite a bit. Depending on your business type and role, you may now be able to view balances and payments, schedule payments up to a year ahead, download transcripts and digital notices, pull EIN verification, request a tax compliance check, and give eligible employees account access.

For a busy family business, that can cut down on a lot of unnecessary back-and-forth over routine information.

If you have not logged in recently, you may be surprised by how much is there now.

I write about tax changes, ownership questions, benefit plan issues, and the financial decisions that become more complex as a business evolves.

BBCPAs works especially well with growing companies. They need deeper expertise, but they still want direct access, responsive service, and a firm that will not treat them like a small account.

If that sounds familiar, you will probably find something useful here.

Years of filing and paying on time may now help when one thing goes wrong.

The IRS is rolling out a new Automatic Exemption from Penalty (AEP) program this summer. For eligible taxpayers with a strong compliance history, certain failure-to-file, failure-to-pay, and failure-to-deposit penalties can be prevented from being assessed automatically. No separate request is required.

For businesses with payroll, multiple entities, and a lot of moving parts, one isolated miss may no longer turn into a separate penalty-relief process. AEP can apply when the prior three years, or 12 quarters for quarterly filers, were timely.

A clean compliance history is worth even more than it was before.

Profitable businesses can hit delays during financing because their books require too much explanation.

The issue wasn’t tax. It was owner spending running through operating accounts.

This is one of those problems that doesn’t hurt you until someone else is reviewing your numbers.

If you’re planning a refinance, sale, or capital raise in the next few years, clean separation strengthens your position.

We understand why more businesses are adding credit card surcharges.
Processing fees are real, and for some businesses they are high enough to get attention.

What we tell business owners is this: once you add that fee, it becomes part of what the customer thinks it costs to do business with you. You can separate it on the receipt, but you do not separate it in the customer’s mind.

That does not make it wrong. It does mean it deserves more thought than simply passing along an expense because more businesses are doing it.

Sometimes a surcharge is the right answer. Sometimes it is a sign that pricing has fallen behind costs. Those are two different situations.

Instead of starting with the fee, perhaps start with the margin. If the numbers support it and it fits the way you want to run the business, then fine. But it should be a deliberate decision, not a reflex.

If this question keeps coming up in your business, it may be worth taking a closer look at what your pricing is carrying and what it is not.

Remembrance isn't passive.

One meaningful way to honor those who served is to be of service ourselves.
✔️ Check on a veteran-owned business.
✔️ Donate to a local veterans’ organization.
✔️ Help a military family with something practical.
✔️ Hire, refer, mentor, volunteer, or simply show up where help is needed.

Freedom is something we steward. What is one organization, business, or act of service you would recommend supporting this Memorial Day weekend?

Wishing everyone who celebrates a meaningful Easter weekend.

I hope you get some time away from the noise and a chance to sit at the table with the people who matter most.

Back at it Monday.

We built our IRS Toolbox because the same questions kept coming up.

Where do I find official due dates? Which EFTPS link is correct? What form applies here?

None of this is complex. It’s just scattered.

So we consolidated what we use most often into one branded reference clients and colleagues can keep open during payroll runs or quarterly estimates.

It’s not advice. It’s a shortcut. 👉https://bbcpas.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/BENIC-IRS-Toolbox-for-Small-Business-Owners.pdf

Most business luck tends to look like preparation, clean books, steady cash, fewer surprises.

Still, I hope this week brings you a little of both.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day to the families building something that lasts.
