Throwback Thursday! This one’s a doozy! On the evening of New Year’s Eve in 1996, the power was out after nearly two straight weeks of rain. Riley recalls hearing branches snapping outside. When they stepped out to investigate, they noticed part of the mountainside had begun to slide.

The mudslide that followed caused significant damage and led to Ward’s closing for nearly a year while cleanup and rebuilding took place. Three greenhouses were lost, and deep mud flowed into many others. It filled a deep gully, buried a pump house, old cars, and a storage shed along the way. It reshaped parts of the landscape and changed the river’s flow. It was a strong reminder of how unpredictable and powerful Mother Nature can be. Circa 1996/1997
