A firm favourite among us here at Funky HQ, both the C37A and later C38/B models make for really excellent “all-rounder” mics. Paired with a decent pre they really shine, with the C37 sounding particularly gorgeous on vocals, acoustic guitar, cabs, overheads and more. It possesses a certain magic touch that can somehow tame harsh sources with an almost ribbon-like quality, whilst adding subtle compression, and imparting a touch of vintage character and top-end polish. They also take high SPL sources incredibly well and look damn good too.👌
As with all vintage mics from that era, good examples are increasingly hard to find and climbing in price. Whilst this rather lovely example will be listed soon, it’s also worth noting the clever folks over at have reissued the C37 in the form of the Tonelux JC37 - a wonderfully engineered faithful recreation of the original C37 at a fraction of the price.
