National food reviewer and social media powerhouse Keith Lee says he is changing his plans and launching his Midwest Food Tour in Gary, Indiana, instead of Chicago after learning what residents across Northwest Indiana have been enduring following last week’s catastrophic storms.

In an emotional video, Lee said he had been preparing to launch the tour beginning in Chicago, but questioned how he could comfortably do that while people just miles away in Gary have gone more than a week without electricity.

Lee said he has been communicating with Gary Mayor Eddie Melton, the Salvation Army and others about how he can help.

He says he is headed to Gary to distribute food, resources and use his massive platform however he can to assist residents.

And the underlying crisis is very real. More than 300,000 NIPSCO customers initially lost service after the Aug. 11 storm, described as the largest outage in the utility’s history.

As of Monday afternoon, more than 100,000 Indiana customers were reportedly still without electricity, with Gary among the communities hit particularly hard.

Lee was especially passionate about something many Northwest Indiana residents have been asking themselves: Why isn’t what’s happening in Gary a much bigger national story?

The nationally known food influencer asked Hoosiers to tell him what else he can do once he gets here.

Guerilla style marketing
Engage with event attendees and create memorable interactions
Encourage participation in brand-related activities and experiences
Distribute promotional materials and/or branded items
Answer basic brand and event-related questions
Keep the activation area clean, organized, and fully stocked
Assist with resetting and maintaining the space throughout the event
Encourage attendees to engage with the brand on social media when applicable
Communicate effectively with fellow staff and event management
Follow all brand guidelines, dress code requirements, and health & safety protocols
Maintain a positive, energetic, and professional attitude throughout the entire shift
