🐻 WORKBENCH WEDNESDAY!🔨

It's only foam… until you make it something extraordinary!

Creating an exceptional lifesize bear mount takes a whole lot more than simply ordering a form and putting a hide on it!

Every bear is unique, and achieving the proper anatomy, expression, and overall character often requires extensive customization. These details make all the difference.

Today's workbench photos show just a glimpse of the alterations being made to this bear. These changes aren't just about making the hide fit. They're about creating a mount that truly captures the individuality and presence of the animal.
The goal isn't simply to make it fit. The goal is to make it RIGHT!

This is where artistic vision, anatomical knowledge, and craftsmanship come together. It's also one of my favorite parts of the process!

🫎 🫎QUALITY IS IN THE DETAILS!🫎🫎

When transporting cervids like moose across the border into the States, the antlers must be thoroughly cleaned and free of all tissue. This creates an extra step in the process that shouldn’t be overlooked!

One thing that can easily get missed is the grease left behind during the boiling process. As grease renders out, it can adhere to the antlers, eventually creating unpleasant odors, attracting bugs, and becoming a magnet for dust if it isn’t properly addressed.

Here’s a look at my cleaning process. First, a preliminary wash with Dawn dish soap to loosen things up, followed by a thorough scrub with a professional degreaser. Once I’m satisfied with the cleanliness, I finish with a final scrub using OdoBan.

The boiling process can also change the natural appearance of the antlers, darkening some areas while the steam lightens others. Once they’re completely cleaned, these antlers will be recolored to the client’s specifications.

These extra steps might not be the most glamorous part of taxidermy, but they’re part of doing the job right. It’s about more than getting a mount out the door. It’s about paying attention to the details that help preserve your trophy and the memories behind it for years to come.

Crazy to see the difference in scale between a big Michigan whitetail and a HUGE Yukon bull moose! 🫎 The size difference is something else!

Meanwhile, it’s just another manic Monday in the shop… prepping capes, altering forms, test fitting, tanning, skinning, salting, and keeping all the moving pieces going. 💪

🐟 Sneak peek at what may be one of my last skin-mount fish!

I’ve been slowly steering away from skin mounts, and eventually, I’ll be offering replica fish mounts exclusively to the general public.

It’s a gradual transition, but one I’ve been working toward. Stay tuned for the reveal of this one! 👀🎣
